Foreign direct investment prospects promising for 2005-2008
This article presents the results of the surveys of FDI experts, transnational corporations and investment promotion agencies in UNCTAD's Global Investment Prospects Assessment (GIPA). According to their predictions, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) will continue to grow over the short and medium term. However, there were a number of surprises in the investment locations selected as most attractive, as well as in the ranking for the most important FDI source countries, with many developing countries among the top 10 or top 15. Prospects for FDI vary significantly by industry, the UNCTAD surveys find. The outlook for the services sector will continue to be more positive than for the manufacturing or primary sectors.
