KING COTTON FREEZES TAJIKISTAN (By Don Van Atta 19/03/2008 issue of the CACI Analyst)
Tajikistan is mountainous and arid. The six percent of its surface area that is suitable for cultivation requires expensive land reclamation and irrigation. Those systems, engineered to support large-scale cotton production, were heavily damaged in the 1990s civil war and in any case decay quickly if they are not regularly used and maintained.
