May 26, 2008. Global Environment Facility's Small Grants Programme in Uzbekistan Welcomes Open Discussion of the National Programme Strategy
Global Environment Facility's Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP) has announced public hearings of the National Programme Strategy for Uzbekistan. GEF SGP aims at assisting NGOs and local communities at their efforts to protect the environment. The Programme in Uzbekistan focuses on three main thematic areas of GEF's intervetion: a) biodiversity conservation; b) adaptation to climate change and mitigation of its consequences; c) land degradation. The Programme successfully works in a number of developing countries of the world introducing effective approaches and methods to conservation and sustainable use of natural resources. The Small Grants Programme is financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), whereas United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) with support from the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) administers the programme implementation. GEF SGP in Uzbekistan has already established its National Steering Committee (NSC) that is called to guide the Programme's operations. The NSC consists of representatives from NGOs, academia and governmental agencies.

May 15, 2008—May 16, 2008. Tajik, Kyrgyz presidents meet in Khujand to discuss cooperation issues
Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev is arriving in the Tajik northern city of Khujand tomorrow for a two-day working visit, according to presidential press service. Bakiyev and his Tajik counterpart, President Emomali Rahmon, are expected to discuss issues related to border delimitation, trade and economic cooperation between the two countries and preparations for the SCO summit. We will recall that the issue of delimitation and demarcation of Tajikistan's common border with Kyrgyzstan has not yet settled completely. In the Sughd province, incidents are sometimes occurring between residents of the Tajik district of Isfara and the Kyrgyz district of Batken over water consumption problems.

May 15, 2008. G.Kirkilas offers to conduct the next Kyrgyz-Lithuanian business forum in Lithuania
Prime Minister of Lithuania Gediminas Kirkilas offers to conduct the next Kyrgyz-Lithuanian business forum in Lithuania. It was told at today's Kyrgyz-Lithuanian business forum in Bishkek. G.Kirkilas said Kyrgyzstan and Lithuania have signed numerous important economic treaties. "The commodity circulation between Kyrgyzstan and Lithuania since 2004 has increased in four times. I think it is not enough", - said the guest. The Prime Ministers of Kyrgyzstan and Lithuania have signed a treaty on setting up intergovernmental commission, which will work on the constant basis and solve problems in the field of business. The Lithuanian PM highly appreciated Kyrgyzstan's intention to further strengthening policy, making it more attractive. The guest expressed hope the states would cooperate not in the field of economy but also in other spheres - political, culture, defense.

May 15, 2008. Turkmenistan-OSCE: expanding partnership in law drafting
A two-day workshop organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, the Turkmen National Institute for Democracy and Human Rights under President of Turkmenistan and the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat started in the Turkmen capital. The key aspects of further improvement of the national legislation in compliance with the norms of international law are put on the agenda of the seminar. The forum was held in the framework of the joint projects between the government of Turkmenistan and the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat. It brought together the deputies of the Mejlis, the officials of the MFA, the Ministry of Home Affairs, he Ministry of Justice, the Prosecutor General's Office, the Supreme Council, the Institute of State and Law under President of Turkmenistan, the Turkmen National Institute for Democracy and Human Rights under President of Turkmenistan, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Culture and Broadcasting Activities and the journalists. Among the guests are Head of the Legislative Support Unit of the Office for Democracy and Human Rights Mr. Denis Petit and the international experts.

May 15, 2008. Kazakhstan, Lithuania team up on energy
Lithuania is interested in developing energy cooperation with Kazakhstan, said Lithuanian Prime Minister Gediminas Kirkilas. "We touched on very important energy issues. This is very important for Lithuania," Kirkilas said during a meeting with Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, the Kazakhstan Today news agency reported. "Lithuania needs alternative supplies of gas and, possibly, oil." He said the supply need comes from Lithuania's plans to close the Ignalina nuclear power plant. The possibility of constructing a liquefied gas terminal in Klaipeda, a seaport in Lithuania, was also discussed, Kazinform refers to UPI. "I think that Kazakhstan will participate in the construction of the terminal or in supplying liquefied gas," Nazarbayev said.

Representatives of government bodies and non-governmental organizations, law enforcement agencies and the judicial system discussed the implementation of the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) at UNDP-backed workshop on 14 May 2008. The event was organized within the joint project of UNDP and the Women's Committee of Uzbekistan "Legislative and Institutional Capacity Development for Women's Empowerment in Uzbekistan". The project is directed at supporting and building the capacity of the government, civil society and mass media in reducing gender gaps via raising awareness of and implementing the recommendations of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW Committee) to Uzbekistan

May 15, 2008. Tajik entrepreneurs to participate at China Harbin Fair
Tajikistan is expected to take part at China Harbin Fair that will open in Harbin on June 15, Asia-Plus has learned at Tajikistan's Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI). The source at CCI said that that issue had been discussed at meeting of the CCI head Sharif Said with visiting Chinese delegation led by Izyen Ewu (phonetically spelled), the deputy secretary general of the people's government of China's Heilung-Kiang Province. In the course of the talks, the sides also considered the possibility of China's investing in development of mining and processing industries in Tajikistan. May 14, 2008. ADB increase aid to Kyrgyzstan by 25%
The Asian Development Bank will increase donor aid to Kyrgyzstan by 25%, the Finance Ministry press service reported. The agreement was reached between the President of the Asian Development Bank Haruhiko Kuroda and Kyrgyz Finance Minister Tajikan Kalimbetova during her visit to Madrid. Haruhiko Kuroda praised a high level of cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and the bank. Besides, the bank will further advance efforts supporting development of the social life and economy in the country.

May 14, 2008. Turkish companies to reconstruct cinemas and circus in Ashgabat
Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov signed a number of resolutions at a government meeting on May 12. The documents order the reconstruction of two cinemas and the building of the Turkmen State Circus together with an underground motor tunnel in Ashgabat. The reconstruction should start this May. The ministry of culture, TV and Radio will act as a principal of the reconstruction, the Turkmenistan.ru correspondent reports from Ashgabat.

May 14, 2008. Kazakhstan and South Korea are intended to increase mutual trade volumes
Kazakhstan and South Korea intend to activate the volumes of the mutual trade. It was declared during negotiations of prime ministers of two countries, agency reports. "Sides will attach efforts for the further increase of volumes of bilateral trade turnover, maximally using existing potential," says the distributed joint statement of Kazakhstan and Korea. The document says that "the sides stood for the further increase of the effectiveness of intergovernmental of commission on trade-economic cooperation, joint committee on cooperation in the sphere of energy and mineral resources, as well as the sides agreed in the nearest time to conduct the first session of the joint commission on cultural cooperation."

President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov received Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia Hasan Wirayuda at the Oqsaroy residence on 13 May, UzA reported. "We consider your visit as another manifestation of mutual interest in developing cooperation," said Islam Karimov. "While Uzbekistan and Indonesia are geographically far apart, the historical and spiritual closeness and a single religion make us close." Indonesia was one of the first foreign states that President Islam Karimov visited after Uzbekistan gained independence. The visit had laid the legal foundations for the development of relations between the countries.

May 13, 2008. Tajik president, Kazakh PM discuss cooperation issues
President Emomali Rahmon held talks with Kazakh Prime Minister Karim Masimov in Astana, Kazakhstan today, Tajik presidential press service said. In the course of the talks, the two expressed satisfaction with the level of Kazakhstan's investment of money in Tajikistan's economy. During the meeting, it was noted that 47 Tajik-Kazakh joint ventures currently work in Tajikistan. Of them, 15 were launched at the expense of investments provided by Kazakh entrepreneurs only. Rahmon and Masimov noted that the establishment of a Joint Investment Fund will give a new impulse for further expansion of bilateral cooperation between the two countries. They noted that construction of a 500-kilovolt power grid Khujand-Almaty is profitable for all countries of the Central Asian region, the press service said.

May 13, 2008. Kazakhstan to launch 20 intellectual schools
In line with the President's instruction, Kazakh Government has adopted a decision on creation of 20 intellectual schools of the 1st President in Kazakhstan. As Education and Science Minister Zhanseit Tuimebayev informed, the schools will be managed by a state-run Orken JSC that is being established at present. A draft decree on establishment of the Orken JSC with KZT 1.3 bln charter capital was approved at a governmental sitting. "The project is to be realized in 3 years," the Minister said. The schools will have quite new curriculum in accordance with the world educational standards. Graduates of intellectual schools will have an opportunity to enter any foreign university.

President Emomali Rahmon today left for Astana, Kazakhstan for a two-day official visit. Davlat Nazriyev, head of the Tajik MFA information department, told Asia-Plus today that the visit is expected to result in signing of eight bilateral documents, with three of them being signed by President Emomali Rahmon and his Kazakh counterpart, President Nursultan Nazarbayev.
