May 12, 2008. Tajik president leaves for Astana
President Emomali Rahmon today left for Astana, Kazakhstan for a two-day official visit. Davlat Nazriyev, head of the Tajik MFA information department, told Asia-Plus today that the visit is expected to result in signing of eight bilateral documents, with three of them being signed by President Emomali Rahmon and his Kazakh counterpart, President Nursultan Nazarbayev.

May 12, 2008. Local self-governance - an effective mechanism of implementing people's interests
The interagency workgroup and the international consultants held a working meeting within the framework of the Local Self-Governance Development in Turkmenistan Project implemented in collaboration with the UN Development Programme (UNDP) at the Mejlis of Turkmenistan. The meeting brought together the deputies of the Turkmen Parliament, the specialists of the national ministries and departments, the experts of the Turkmen National Institute for Democracy and Human Rights under President of Turkmenistan. Co-operation in improving the national laws on local self-governance is a priority trend of Turkmenistan-United Nations constructive partnership.

May 12, 2008. Lithuanian Honorary Consulate open in Kyrgyzstan
The Honorary Consulate of Lithuania will be launched in Kyrgyzstan, Stanislav Vidugiris, the Honorary consul of Lithuania in Kyrgyzstan informed the news agency "24.kg". The Lithuanian delegation headed by the Prime Minister Gediminas Kirkilas will visit Kyrgyzstan on May 14, 2008. Heads of ministries, members of parliament, business circles representatives, the Chancellor of Lithuania, and the director general of the Lithuanian railroad come over to meet with the Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiev, the Prime Minister Igor Chudinov and sign number of bilateral agreements on double tax carve-out and investments attraction. The Lithuania-Kyrgyzstan business forum will run in the Ak-Keme hotel in Bishkek with attendance of Kyrgyz businessmen, the Honorary consul said.

May 12, 2008. UWED Legal Clinic holds competition among students
Legal Clinic under the University of World Economy and Diplomacy (UWED) launched a team competition among its students on civil processes on 11 May 2008. The competition will be held in three stages. Six teams are taking part in the first stage and four teams will qualify to the next stage. Two winners of the semi-finals will participate in the final of the contest. The contest aimed at development of skills of Legal Clinic students on civil processes, including preparation of documents for courts, collection and presentation of evidences, presentation skills, adhering to legal procedures and existing legislation.

May 12, 2008. Astana to host II Eurasian Women's Summit
II Eurasian Women Summit is to be held in Astana on June 25-26. The event is organized by Kazakhstan Businesswomen's Association under the support of Kazakh Culture and Information Ministry, Kazinform refers to the Association. About 400 leaders and reps of public, political, expert and business organizations from all regions of Kazakhstan and other countries will take part in the upcoming summit. An international conference on Progress through cooperation, a parade of leaders, master classes with leading trainers of international level are planned to be held within the summit.

May 2, 2008—May 15, 2008. UNDP, Women’s Committee announce contest for young journalists
United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Country Office in Uzbekistan and Women’s Committee announced a competition for young journalists (under age of 30) for the best coverage of issues on elimination of discrimination against women. The contest will be held within the project “Legislative and Institutional Capacity Development for Women’s Empowerment in Uzbekistan”, which directed to support and build the capacity of the government, civil society and mass media in reducing the gender gaps via raising awareness of and implementing the recommendations of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women to Uzbekistan. The contest aimed to motivate journalists of Uzbekistan to cover gender-related issues to raise gender awareness and knowledge of UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), as well as eliminate gender stereotypes in the community. Representatives of print-media, TV and radio stations and Internet outlets can participate in the event. Deadline for submission of applications and materials is 15 June 2008. Applications can be submitted via email to cedaw.undp@gmail.com or delivered to UNDP Uzbekistan office at 4, Shevchenko, Tashkent, 100029, Uzbekistan. January 30, 2008—December 31, 2008. Competition on the best coverage of socioeconomic problems announced in Kulob
The Kulob mayor’s office has announced a competition among local journalists on the best coverage of socioeconomic problems facing the city and the district of Kulob. Journalists of all local publications irrespective of forms of property are invited to participate in the competition, which is dedicated to the 1,150 anniversary of founder of Tajik-Persian classical literature Abu Abdullo Rudaki and the Tajik Language Year that will be marked this year. The winners of the competition will be given prizes in money: 1st place – 1,000 somonis; 2nd place – 500 somonis; and 3rd place – 300 somonis. The award ceremony for the winners will be held at the first press conference of the Kulob mayor in 2009.

Creative Union of Journalists of Uzbekistan invites the public correspondents to take part in the "Best journalist of the year" contest. The stories published in the newspapers and magazines, websites, as well as those aired through television and radio from June 2007 to June 2008 will be accepted for consideration. The materials on the recommendations will be presented through the branch offices of the Creative Union of Journalists of Uzbekistan in the Republic of Karakalpakstan, provinces and the city of Tashkent. The journalists are kindly requested to send along with their works the data on the place of their employment, telephone numbers, address and copy of their passports.
