Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev is arriving in the Tajik northern city of Khujand tomorrow for a two-day working visit, according to presidential press service. Bakiyev and his Tajik counterpart, President Emomali Rahmon, are expected to discuss issues related to border delimitation, trade and economic cooperation between the two countries and preparations for the SCO summit. We will recall that the issue of delimitation and demarcation of Tajikistan's common border with Kyrgyzstan has not yet settled completely. In the Sughd province, incidents are sometimes occurring between residents of the Tajik district of Isfara and the Kyrgyz district of Batken over water consumption problems.

Prime Minister of Lithuania Gediminas Kirkilas offers to conduct the next Kyrgyz-Lithuanian business forum in Lithuania. It was told at today's Kyrgyz-Lithuanian business forum in Bishkek. G.Kirkilas said Kyrgyzstan and Lithuania have signed numerous important economic treaties. "The commodity circulation between Kyrgyzstan and Lithuania since 2004 has increased in four times. I think it is not enough", - said the guest. The Prime Ministers of Kyrgyzstan and Lithuania have signed a treaty on setting up intergovernmental commission, which will work on the constant basis and solve problems in the field of business. The Lithuanian PM highly appreciated Kyrgyzstan's intention to further strengthening policy, making it more attractive. The guest expressed hope the states would cooperate not in the field of economy but also in other spheres - political, culture, defense.

A two-day workshop organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, the Turkmen National Institute for Democracy and Human Rights under President of Turkmenistan and the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat started in the Turkmen capital. The key aspects of further improvement of the national legislation in compliance with the norms of international law are put on the agenda of the seminar. The forum was held in the framework of the joint projects between the government of Turkmenistan and the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat. It brought together the deputies of the Mejlis, the officials of the MFA, the Ministry of Home Affairs, he Ministry of Justice, the Prosecutor General's Office, the Supreme Council, the Institute of State and Law under President of Turkmenistan, the Turkmen National Institute for Democracy and Human Rights under President of Turkmenistan, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Culture and Broadcasting Activities and the journalists. Among the guests are Head of the Legislative Support Unit of the Office for Democracy and Human Rights Mr. Denis Petit and the international experts.

Lithuania is interested in developing energy cooperation with Kazakhstan, said Lithuanian Prime Minister Gediminas Kirkilas. "We touched on very important energy issues. This is very important for Lithuania," Kirkilas said during a meeting with Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, the Kazakhstan Today news agency reported. "Lithuania needs alternative supplies of gas and, possibly, oil." He said the supply need comes from Lithuania's plans to close the Ignalina nuclear power plant. The possibility of constructing a liquefied gas terminal in Klaipeda, a seaport in Lithuania, was also discussed, Kazinform refers to UPI. "I think that Kazakhstan will participate in the construction of the terminal or in supplying liquefied gas," Nazarbayev said.

Representatives of government bodies and non-governmental organizations, law enforcement agencies and the judicial system discussed the implementation of the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) at UNDP-backed workshop on 14 May 2008. The event was organized within the joint project of UNDP and the Women's Committee of Uzbekistan "Legislative and Institutional Capacity Development for Women's Empowerment in Uzbekistan". Tajikistan is expected to take part at China Harbin Fair that will open in Harbin on June 15, Asia-Plus has learned at Tajikistan's Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI). The source at CCI said that that issue had been discussed at meeting of the CCI head Sharif Said with visiting Chinese delegation led by Izyen Ewu (phonetically spelled), the deputy secretary general of the people's government of China's Heilung-Kiang Province. United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Country Office in Uzbekistan and Women’s Committee announced a competition for young journalists (under age of 30) for the best coverage of issues on elimination of discrimination against women. The contest will be held within the project “Legislative and Institutional Capacity Development for Women’s Empowerment in Uzbekistan”, which directed to support and build the capacity of the government, civil society and mass media in reducing the gender gaps via raising awareness of and implementing the recommendations of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women to Uzbekistan. The contest aimed to motivate journalists of Uzbekistan to cover gender-related issues to raise gender awareness and knowledge of UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), as well as eliminate gender stereotypes in the community. Representatives of print-media, TV and radio stations and Internet outlets can participate in the event. Deadline for submission of applications and materials is 15 June 2008. The Kulob mayor’s office has announced a competition among local journalists on the best coverage of socioeconomic problems facing the city and the district of Kulob. Journalists of all local publications irrespective of forms of property are invited to participate in the competition, which is dedicated to the 1,150 anniversary of founder of Tajik-Persian classical literature Abu Abdullo Rudaki and the Tajik Language Year that will be marked this year. The winners of the competition will be given prizes in money: 1st place – 1,000 somonis; 2nd place – 500 somonis; and 3rd place – 300 somonis. The award ceremony for the winners will be held at the first press conference of the Kulob mayor in 2009.
