May 22, 2008. Astana hosts Kazakh Statistics Agency's enlarged collegium
Enlarged collegium of Kazakhstan's Agency on Statistics is being held in the capital's "Rixos" hotel today. It is dedicated to the development of statistical recording and establishment of Kazakhstan's development indicators in the context of realization of the President's Message to the nation "Growth of Welfare of Kazakhstan's Citizens is the Primary Goal of State Policy", Kazinform reports. Kazakh Statistics Agency's Executive Secretary Yuri Shokamanov dwelled on the President's Message's items with specifying figures. Besides, the speaker touched upon the issue of consistent economic modernization, ensuring of stable economic growth and growth of welfare of Kazakhstan's citizens.

May 22, 2008. Performance-Based Budgeting - concepts, country cases and sectoral applications
Performance-Based Budgeting (PBB) - Concepts, Country Cases and Sectoral Application (Education and Health) training workshop was held from 1 to 4 May 2008 in "Avenue Park" Recreation zone. The event was organized by World Bank Institute and UNDP "Public Finance Reform in Uzbekistan" and "Support to Development of Welfare Improvement Strategy of Uzbekistan" Projects. Enhancing efficiency of budget expenditure in Uzbekistan is one of the key objectives of current economic policy which considerably affects growth rates and sustainability of the national economy. New methods of budget planning used in the fiscal policy should bring to improved social security of the citizens, increased quality of healthcare and education services and maintained macroeconomic stability in the country.

May 22, 2008. Knut Vollebaek proposes meeting of Central Asian education ministers in Ashgabat
Expansion of cooperation between Turkmenistan and OSCE in the sphere of education was the main topic of talks between Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities Knut Vollebaek in Ashgabat on May 21. The OSCE official put forward an idea to hold a meeting of Central Asian education ministers in Ashgabat on cooperation in the sphere of education, including distance learning, the Turkmenistan.ru correspondent reports from Ashgabat. The president of Turkmenistan supported this idea. During the meeting, Knut Vollebaek expressed OSCE's appreciation of reforms in Turkmenistan. In turn, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov stressed the constructive nature of the dialogue with OSCE "which is based on the principles of equality, mutual respect and good will from the outset." Knut Vollebaek informed the president of Turkmenistan about his trip to Lebap province where he visited secondary schools and infant schools, as well s the State Teacher's Training Institute named after S.Seyydi.

May 22, 2008. UN human rights experts to give press conference on May 23
Professor Yakin Erturk, the Special Rapporteur of the United Nations Human Rights Council on Violence against Women, its Causes and Consequences, will give a press conference on the results of her visit to Tajikistan at the UNDO Office in Dushanbe on May 23, Safarbek Soliyev, external relations adviser, UNDP CO, said. We will recall that Ms. Erturk arrived in Tajikistan for an official visit at the invitation of the Tajik Government on May 15. During her stay in Tajikistan, the Special Rapporteur met with Tajik officials, representatives of a number of women's NGOs, civil society members, representatives of United Nations agencies and international organizations, as well as religious leaders and individual victims of violence against women to assess the types of violence against women in Tajikistan as well as the State response to address such violence.

May 22, 2008. Kyrgyz and Polish PMs agreed to assist in investment cooperation between business structures of two states
Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan Igor Chudinov had a meeting yesterday with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. The parties discussed wide range issues of Kyrgyz-Polish relations. I.Chudinov told about the current socio-economic situation in Kyrgyzstan. He expressed Kyrgyzstan's readiness to assist in presence of Polish business in Kyrgyzstan and working out joint economic projects with Poland as well as their implementations. The Kyrgyz PM pointed out the importance of exchanging experience with Poland in working out clusters of economic development in concrete fields of industry, agriculture, tourism etc. Besides, the parties discussed the possibility of cooperation in textile industry. Issues of attracting Polish business to Kyrgyzstan in the field of construction were dicussed. I.Chudinov and D.Tusk considered issues of Poland's participation in ecological programs on Kyrgyzstan, particularly, rehabilitating tailing dumps in the territory of Kyrgyzstan. Issues of cooperation in humanitarian fields were also touched upon, particularly, the possibility of training and raising qualification of doctors, teachers and scientists from Kyrgyzstan.

January 30, 2008—December 31, 2008. Competition on the best coverage of socioeconomic problems announced in Kulob
The Kulob mayor’s office has announced a competition among local journalists on the best coverage of socioeconomic problems facing the city and the district of Kulob. Journalists of all local publications irrespective of forms of property are invited to participate in the competition, which is dedicated to the 1,150 anniversary of founder of Tajik-Persian classical literature Abu Abdullo Rudaki and the Tajik Language Year that will be marked this year. The winners of the competition will be given prizes in money: 1st place – 1,000 somonis; 2nd place – 500 somonis; and 3rd place – 300 somonis. The award ceremony for the winners will be held at the first press conference of the Kulob mayor in 2009.

Creative Union of Journalists of Uzbekistan invites the public correspondents to take part in the "Best journalist of the year" contest. The stories published in the newspapers and magazines, websites, as well as those aired through television and radio from June 2007 to June 2008 will be accepted for consideration. The materials on the recommendations will be presented through the branch offices of the Creative Union of Journalists of Uzbekistan in the Republic of Karakalpakstan, provinces and the city of Tashkent.
