May 28, 2008—May 29, 2008. Role of civil society in combating corruption discussed in Dushanbe
A two-day seminar formally titled "Civil Society and Fight against Corruption" opened in Dushanbe on May 28. The event staged by the UNDP CO Tajikistan as part of the project for providing transparency and accountability is discussing issues related to initiating campaign on improving the society awareness level and establishing norms for the public sector on presenting reports to the public. In the meantime, in a report released at a press conference in Dushanbe, Sherkhon Salimzoda, director of the Agency for the State Financial Control and Combating Corruption, revealed on April 24 that 338 officials have been reprimanded over the first three months of this year and 13 of them have been sacked.

May 28, 2008. Workshop in Namangan promotes arbitration system among businesses, population
Over 30 representatives of businesses and judicial system, as well as lawyers, took part in a workshop on arbitration and alternative ways of dispute regulation, which was held on 23 May in Namangan city. The workshop was held to train arbitrators and mediators to improve their professional skills, as well as to familiarize businesses and lawyers with modern trends in arbitration. The workshop was organized by joint project of UNDP and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Uzbekistan "Supporting to the development of arbitration courts and other alternative methods of dispute settlement in the Republic of Uzbekistan" (Arbitration project). The project focuses on development of the arbitration courts and other alternative ways of dispute resolution through creation of Arbitration Development Center, which was officially opened in early May 2008.

May 28, 2008. Kazakh-Latvian coop in transport develops actively: T. Zhdanova
"Kazakh-Latvian cooperation in transport sphere develops actively", Vice President of Commerce and Industry Chamber of Kazakhstan Tatyana Zhdanova has told at a Kazakh-Latvian Business Forum in Almaty. As the Vice President noted, launch of a specialized Kazakh-Latvian grain terminal in Ventspils seaport in 2005 became one of the largest events in both countries' economic cooperation. "This is our Republic's first investment project in the Baltic States and it demonstrates Kazakhstan's potential not only in Latvia but also on the whole European market", T. Zhdanova noted. There are 44 officially registered joint enterprises in Kazakhstan. 33 Kazakh-Latvian joint ventures are working in Latvia at present.

May 28, 2008. Turkmenistan, EU sign MOU on energy cooperation
The ceremony of signing the Memorandum of understanding on energy cooperation between Turkmenistan and the European Union took place in the Presidential Palace, May 26, the Ashgabat correspondent of Turkmenistan.ru reports. The imposing EU delegation led by Andris Piebalgs, EU commissioner for energy arrived in the Turkmen capital to sign the document. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of France in Turkmenistan Christian Lechervi attended the meeting. The members of the Cabinet of Ministers and high rank officials of Mejlis of Turkmenistan took part in the meeting from the Turkmen side.

May 28, 2008. CIS Electric Power Council's Meeting discussed rational usage of potential of transboundary rivers
CIS Electric Power Council held its 33rd meeting. The meeting was chaired by Chairman of the Management Board of RAO UES Anatoly Chubais. The meeting was also attended by the officials in charge of the energy industry in the CIS countries. During the meeting, the participants determined the operational results of the CIS energy systems during the 2007/2008 autumn-winter period, discussed issues of creating a common electricity market in the CIS member states, and considered the progress made in the preparation of a feasibility study for synchronous interconnection of the energy systems of the CIS countries and the IES of Baltic states with the West-European energy systems of the European Union for the Co-ordination of Transmission of Electricity (UCTE). The CIS EPC is actively working to involve organizations and companies interested in cooperation with the Council as Supervisors. Currently, over ten leading Russian and foreign companies and institutes act as the Council's Supervisors.

May 27, 2008—May 28, 2008. Second conference of interior ministers of ECO member states starts in Ashgabat
The second conference of the interior ministers of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) member states began at President Hotel in Ashgabat on May 26. The conference is attended by heads, senior specialists and experts of law enforcing agencies of 10 countries as well as UN special agencies. In the course of the two-day conference, the delegations will discuss issues related to combating illegal drug trade and drug trafficking, terrorism and transnational organized crime, illegal migration, smuggling, corruption and money laundering, the Turkmenistan.ru correspondent reports from Ashgabat.

January 30, 2008—December 31, 2008. Competition on the best coverage of socioeconomic problems announced in Kulob
The Kulob mayor’s office has announced a competition among local journalists on the best coverage of socioeconomic problems facing the city and the district of Kulob. Journalists of all local publications irrespective of forms of property are invited to participate in the competition, which is dedicated to the 1,150 anniversary of founder of Tajik-Persian classical literature Abu Abdullo Rudaki and the Tajik Language Year that will be marked this year. The winners of the competition will be given prizes in money: 1st place – 1,000 somonis; 2nd place – 500 somonis; and 3rd place – 300 somonis. The award ceremony for the winners will be held at the first press conference of the Kulob mayor in 2009.

Creative Union of Journalists of Uzbekistan invites the public correspondents to take part in the "Best journalist of the year" contest. The stories published in the newspapers and magazines, websites, as well as those aired through television and radio from June 2007 to June 2008 will be accepted for consideration. The materials on the recommendations will be presented through the branch offices of the Creative Union of Journalists of Uzbekistan in the Republic of Karakalpakstan, provinces and the city of Tashkent.
