May 5, 2008. International Development Association (IDA) grant $12M for Bishkek, Osh new residential blocks development
International Development Association (IDA) grants $12million for development of new residential blocks in Osh and Bishkek, press service of the Kyrgyz Finance Ministry reported. The relative agreement was signed by Tajikan Kalimbetova, the Kyrgyz Finance Minister and World Bank Resident Representative Roger Robinson on April 30, 2008. The grant funds will go for Bishkek and Osh infrastructure development. The project will be co-financed by the Kyrgyz government, which allots $1.2 million for the project and Bishkek and Osh city administrations, with $1.1 million. The $14.3 million worth project will reportedly last for four years, the press service added.

May 5, 2008. IMF positively assesses economic reform in Turkmenistan
"We are positively assessing the progress achieved by Turkmenistan in implementing economic reforms in the last one and a half year, particularly the latest measures with regard to adopting a unified exchange rate of Manat," said Peter Wingley, head of the IMF mission for Turkmenistan, said. P.Wingley made this statement in the course of annual consultations with the IMF mission in Ashgabat, the Turkmen State News Agency (TDH) reports. "This step in combination with other supporting reforms is quite useful in furthering the economic and financial development of Turkmenistan and its successful integration into the world economy. The IMF mission will continue providing support to reforms in Turkmenistan, including the forthcoming denomination of the national currency, Manat, in 2009," Peter Wingley said. Let us recall that Turkmenistan introduced a unified exchange rate of manat to foreign currency on May 1 which was set by the Central Bank of Turkmenistan at Manat 14,250 per one US dollar.

May 5, 2008. UNDP helps to open Arbitration Development Center in Uzbekistan
Deputy Resident Representative of the UNDP Country Office in Uzbekistan Ms Kyoko Postill and the chairperson of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Uzbekistan Mr Alisher Shaykhov formally opened the Arbitration Development Center under the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Uzbekistan on Friday, 2 May 2008. The Arbitration Development Center was founded within the joint project of the UNDP Country Office in Uzbekistan and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Uzbekistan "Supporting to the development of arbitration courts and other alternative methods of dispute settlement in the Republic of Uzbekistan" (Arbitration project). The project focuses on development of the arbitration courts and other alternative ways of dispute resolution through creation of the Center. Uzbekistan adopted the Law "On arbitration" in 2006, which was aimed at regulation of creation and operation of arbitration courts in Uzbekistan. The law came into force in February 2007. The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Uzbekistan created arbitration courts in all regions of Uzbekistan to develop favourable conditions for development of the system in the country. The courts reviewed over 700 cases in 2007.

May 5, 2008. Development of Kazakhstan's electric-power sector discussed in Astana
Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Karim Massimov has held a meeting today with reps of foreign side of the Council of Foreign Investors under the President of Kazakhstan. The sides discussed issues of development of Kazakhstan's electric-power sector, Kazinform refers to the PM's press service. The Council reps made a presentation of current problems of the sector, measures on improvement of the investment climate, perfection of tariff policy and methodology of tariff design. Position of the Kazakh Government towards tariff policy for energy producers was considered as well. Following the results of the meeting Karim Massimov charged Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Sauat Mynbayev to continue talks with reps of the Council who, in their turn, expressed readiness to develop close cooperation.

May 5, 2008. Russian economic team to arrive in Tajikistan next week
An economic delegation of Russia's Irkutsk region, comprising representatives of the regional administration, Eastern Siberia's chamber of commerce and industry and businessmen, will arrive in Tajikistan on May 13, according to Tajikistan's Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI). The source at a CCI said that during its stay in Tajikistan, the Irkutsk delegation is scheduled to hold a number of talks with Tajik enterprises and organizations dealing with organization of external labor migration and building materials supplies to discuss cooperation issues. They will discuss relating to expanding commercial relations, delivering saw timbers to Tajikistan, sending Tajik labor migrants to Russia's Baikal and importing Tajik aluminum, the source said. The delegation will stay in Tajikistan until May 20. It is the second visit of the Irkutsk economic delegation to Tajikistan. For the first time, the Irkutsk delegation was in Tajikistan in 2003.

May 2, 2008—May 15, 2008. UNDP, Women’s Committee announce contest for young journalists
United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Country Office in Uzbekistan and Women’s Committee announced a competition for young journalists (under age of 30) for the best coverage of issues on elimination of discrimination against women. The contest will be held within the project “Legislative and Institutional Capacity Development for Women’s Empowerment in Uzbekistan”, which directed to support and build the capacity of the government, civil society and mass media in reducing the gender gaps via raising awareness of and implementing the recommendations of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women to Uzbekistan. The contest aimed to motivate journalists of Uzbekistan to cover gender-related issues to raise gender awareness and knowledge of UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), as well as eliminate gender stereotypes in the community. Representatives of print-media, TV and radio stations and Internet outlets can participate in the event. Deadline for submission of applications and materials is 15 June 2008. April 29, 2008—May 6, 2008. GDP growth rate reach 6.8% in second quarter of 2008
GDP growth rate is expected to reach 6.8% or 49.5 bln soms in the second quarter of 2008, the Ministry of Economy and Trade forecasted. Industry is expected to produce goods worth 37.1 mln som. Growth rate will make up 5.4%. Coal mining will increase by 74.4% to hit 64.4 mln som. This is 15.4 tons more than in the first quarter of 2008. Crude oil output is forecasted to surge by 2.9% (17.7 thousand tons) and natural gas output – by 21.1% (4.6 mln cubic meters).

January 30, 2008—December 31, 2008. Competition on the best coverage of socioeconomic problems announced in Kulob
The Kulob mayor’s office has announced a competition among local journalists on the best coverage of socioeconomic problems facing the city and the district of Kulob. Journalists of all local publications irrespective of forms of property are invited to participate in the competition, which is dedicated to the 1,150 anniversary of founder of Tajik-Persian classical literature Abu Abdullo Rudaki and the Tajik Language Year that will be marked this year. The winners of the competition will be given prizes in money: 1st place – 1,000 somonis; 2nd place – 500 somonis; and 3rd place – 300 somonis. The award ceremony for the winners will be held at the first press conference of the Kulob mayor in 2009.

Creative Union of Journalists of Uzbekistan invites the public correspondents to take part in the "Best journalist of the year" contest. The stories published in the newspapers and magazines, websites, as well as those aired through television and radio from June 2007 to June 2008 will be accepted for consideration.
