The "Second International Congress on Entrepreneurship" (ICE08) organized by Business Administration Department of Kyrgyzstan-Turkey Manas University is going to be held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan from May 07 (Wednesday) to May 10 (Saturday), 2008. The Congress will be the assembling place for academicians and professionals from business from all over the world. The main purposes of the 2nd International Congress on Entrepreneurship are to attract attention to the importance of business in order to stimulate the entrepreneurship in Turkic countries; outline the problem spheres of entrepreneurship; provide an opportunity for academicians and professionals from business to come together and interact with each other.

Two groups of medial and social workers will take part in the trainings on gender awareness within the joint project of UNDP and the Women's Committee of Uzbekistan "Legislative and Institutional Capacity Development for Women's Empowerment in Uzbekistan". The project will hold two training entitled "Gender Awareness for medical and social workers" to improve skills and knowledge of medical and social workers on implementation and promotion of the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), its norms and ideas in their professional activities. The CEDAW Convention adopted in 1979 by the UN General Assembly, is an international document on the rights of women. Uzbekistan was the first Central Asian country to ratify the convention in 1995 and has reported twice to the CEDAW Committee on its implementation. The country will present its next report in August 2008.

State and prospects of further expansion of Tajik-Russian cooperation were a major topic of a meeting of President Emomali Rahmon with Russian Ambassador to Tajikistan, Mr. Ramazan Abdulatipov, that was held in Dushanbe on May 6. According to presidential press service, the two confirmed their readiness for further expansion of many-sided cooperation between Tajikistan and the Russian Federation. Expressing satisfaction with growing trade and economic cooperation, Rahmon and Abdulatipov stressed that a two-way trade between Tajikistan and Russia should exceed $1 billion this year.

Growth rate of industrial production in Kyrgyzstan remains lower than the average index in CIS, Interstate Statistics Committee of CIS reported. Growth rate of industrial production in the first quarter of 2008 makes up 4.1 percent that is similar to the same period of 2007. The average index increased by 7 percent throughout CIS. Meantime, the lowest growth rate that reduced to 10.1 percent was recorded in Tajikistan. Azerbaijan and Belarus showed the highest growth rate of industry output of 12.9 percent and 13.6 percent respectively.

Cordially greeting the guests the Turkmen leader focused with satisfaction on the high level of Turkmen-Japanese partnership successfully maintained in a broad range of the fields including the deliveries of high-powered road-building and earth-moving machinery. Expressing belief that a regular meeting of the bilateral committee for economic co-operation would offer a powerful incentive to intensify effective collaboration Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov noted that this co-operation was regarded as of paramount importance and very promising basing on its profound potential and experience of many years as well as the large-scale reform programmes implemented in Turkmenistan.

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Country Office in Uzbekistan and Women’s Committee announced a competition for young journalists (under age of 30) for the best coverage of issues on elimination of discrimination against women. The contest will be held within the project “Legislative and Institutional Capacity Development for Women’s Empowerment in Uzbekistan”, which directed to support and build the capacity of the government, civil society and mass media in reducing the gender gaps via raising awareness of and implementing the recommendations of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women to Uzbekistan. The contest aimed to motivate journalists of Uzbekistan to cover gender-related issues to raise gender awareness and knowledge of UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), as well as eliminate gender stereotypes in the community. Representatives of print-media, TV and radio stations and Internet outlets can participate in the event. Deadline for submission of applications and materials is 15 June 2008. Applications can be submitted via email to cedaw.undp@gmail.com or delivered to UNDP Uzbekistan office at 4, Shevchenko, Tashkent, 100029, Uzbekistan. The Kulob mayor’s office has announced a competition among local journalists on the best coverage of socioeconomic problems facing the city and the district of Kulob. Journalists of all local publications irrespective of forms of property are invited to participate in the competition, which is dedicated to the 1,150 anniversary of founder of Tajik-Persian classical literature Abu Abdullo Rudaki and the Tajik Language Year that will be marked this year. The winners of the competition will be given prizes in money: 1st place – 1,000 somonis; 2nd place – 500 somonis; and 3rd place – 300 somonis. The award ceremony for the winners will be held at the first press conference of the Kulob mayor in 2009.

Creative Union of Journalists of Uzbekistan invites the public correspondents to take part in the "Best journalist of the year" contest. The stories published in the newspapers and magazines, websites, as well as those aired through television and radio from June 2007 to June 2008 will be accepted for consideration. The materials on the recommendations will be presented through the branch offices of the Creative Union of Journalists of Uzbekistan in the Republic of Karakalpakstan, provinces and the city of Tashkent. The journalists are kindly requested to send along with their works the data on the place of their employment, telephone numbers, address and copy of their passports.
