May 8, 2008. Tajik PM calls on Chinese companies to expand cooperation with Tajik businessmen
State and prospects of further expansion of bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and China were discussed at a meeting of Prime Minister Oqil Oqilov with Mr. Wang Sindiye (phonetically spelled), the head of the China New Era Company, that was held in Dushanbe on May 7, according to presidential press service. In the course of the talks, the two expressed satisfaction with increasing pace of expansion of mutually beneficial cooperation between the countries. Pointing out contribution China has made to development of Tajikistan's economy, the prime minister called on Chinese companies to establish closer cooperation with business circles in Tajikistan. For his part, Mr. Wang noted that his company had established cooperation with Tojikmatlubot (Tajikistan's association of consumers' cooperatives) in sectors like procurement, processing and sale of farm produce, etc.

May 8, 2008. WB allocates grant in the amount of 9 mln.dollars to develop Kyrgyzstan's agriculture
The World Bank's Board of Directors approved an IDA grant in the amount of US$ 9million for the Agricultural Investments and Services Project in the Kyrgyz Republic. With food prices at an all time high around the world, the new project will help to reduce rural poverty in the country by increasing productivity and sustainable pasture management. Almost three quarters of the poor and extreme poor live in rural areas, where the prevalence of poverty is higher than in urban areas: 51 percent of the rural population compared to 30 percent of the urban population.

May 8, 2008. Turkmenistan to invest Euro 55 million in development of Mollakara resort
The ministry of health and medical industry of Turkmenistan is to sign a contract with Turkish company Erku for the design and construction of a new recreation center for 500 people, a two-storey hotel, and a solarium for 300 people on the bank of Duzly lake in the Mollakara resort. A residential house with improved conveniences for 18 flats will be also built for staff. Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov signed a decree to this effect "with a view to enlarging the Mollakara resort, further strengthening its material and technical base and enhancing its services to meet recreation needs of people in full."

May 8, 2008. Kazakh Ambassador visited Chabahar, Iran
Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Iran Yerik Utembayev made a working trip to Chabahar special economic zone located on the coast of the Gulf of Oman in Iran, Kazinform refers to the Kazakh diplomatic representation in Iran. The diplomat got familiarized with the progress of development of the trade-industrial zone, infrastructure of the ports of Shahid Beheshti and Kalantari, construction of a deepwater overload terminal, new stocks and other objects of transport infrastructure and program development of the port zone. Besides, the Ambassador met with Managing Director of the special economic zone Mohammad Taher Baqeri Zadeh and head of Chabahar province.

May 2, 2008—May 15, 2008. UNDP, Women’s Committee announce contest for young journalists
United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Country Office in Uzbekistan and Women’s Committee announced a competition for young journalists (under age of 30) for the best coverage of issues on elimination of discrimination against women. The contest will be held within the project “Legislative and Institutional Capacity Development for Women’s Empowerment in Uzbekistan”, which directed to support and build the capacity of the government, civil society and mass media in reducing the gender gaps via raising awareness of and implementing the recommendations of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women to Uzbekistan. The contest aimed to motivate journalists of Uzbekistan to cover gender-related issues to raise gender awareness and knowledge of UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), as well as eliminate gender stereotypes in the community. Representatives of print-media, TV and radio stations and Internet outlets can participate in the event. Deadline for submission of applications and materials is 15 June 2008. January 30, 2008—December 31, 2008. Competition on the best coverage of socioeconomic problems announced in Kulob
The Kulob mayor’s office has announced a competition among local journalists on the best coverage of socioeconomic problems facing the city and the district of Kulob. Journalists of all local publications irrespective of forms of property are invited to participate in the competition, which is dedicated to the 1,150 anniversary of founder of Tajik-Persian classical literature Abu Abdullo Rudaki and the Tajik Language Year that will be marked this year. The winners of the competition will be given prizes in money: 1st place – 1,000 somonis; 2nd place – 500 somonis; and 3rd place – 300 somonis. The award ceremony for the winners will be held at the first press conference of the Kulob mayor in 2009.

Creative Union of Journalists of Uzbekistan invites the public correspondents to take part in the "Best journalist of the year" contest. The stories published in the newspapers and magazines, websites, as well as those aired through television and radio from June 2007 to June 2008 will be accepted for consideration. The materials on the recommendations will be presented through the branch offices of the Creative Union of Journalists of Uzbekistan in the Republic of Karakalpakstan, provinces and the city of Tashkent.
