April 7, 2008. Turkmenistan, India sign memorandum of understanding on cooperation in oil and gas sector
The ministry of oil and gas industry and mineral resources of Turkmenistan and the ministry of oil and natural gas of the Republic of India signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the oil and gas sector. The signing ceremony took place in Ashgabat on April 5 on conclusion of negotiations between Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and Indian Vice President, Chairman of the Upper House of the Indian Parliament Hamid Ansari who arrived in the Turkmen capital at the head of a high-profile delegation. According to a report by the Turkmen State News Agency (TDH), the development of effective cooperation in the fuel-energy sector was paid particular attention during the talks. Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov invited Indian partners to join such important international project as the construction of the Turkmenistan - Afghanistan - Pakistan - India gas pipeline. Hamid Ansari, in turn, expressed sincere gratitude to Turkmenistan for supporting India who wished to join this important project. The Indian Vice-President said Indian big companies expressed willingness to establish closer cooperation with Turkmenistan. The sides highlighted agriculture, textile and pharmaceutical industries as promising areas of cooperation. The sides spoke in favor of boosting cooperation in the humanitarian sphere, in particular in education and science as well as in information technologies.
