June 5, 2008. UN Development Programme celebrates World Environment Day
UN Development Programme (UNDP) in Uzbekistan celebrates the annual World Environment Day. During the event, organized in partnership with State Committee of Nature Protection, UNDP will announce results of the photo-contest "Environment and Development", present photo-catalogue, as well as display the documentary "Environment" produced for this occasion. Each year, on 5 June, United Nations tries to increase worldwide awareness on environmental concerns and enhance political attention and action. The theme of this year's observance is "Kick the habit. Towards the low carbon economy", and it reminds us of one of the greatest environmental challenge of today: Climate Change. The environmental, economic and political implications of climate change are profound. Ecosystems all over the world are undergoing rapid change. Low-lying cities face inundation, fertile lands are turning to desert, and weather patterns are becoming ever more unpredictable. The events, organized by UNDP to mark this day in Uzbekistan, combine into a single theme: Environment and Human Development. More than 300 entries, submitted for UNDP's national photo-contest, show the wide range of pressing environmental concerns. For ages, humans prospered and developed by making use of nature's resources, but today, as the world develops so rapidly and the resources are so easily exhaustible, we see that the harmony is threatened. Not noticing it, humans often behave as we are rivals with the wildlife for the natural resources.
