June 16, 2008. Int'l conference of Central Asian judges is on in Astana
Today Astana hosts an international conference for the judges of Central Asia, devoted to the 10th anniversary since adoption of the Aarhus Convention. "The Supreme Court along with the Environmental Ministry, EU project, OSCE Centre in Astana and UNEP arranged this event. This conference is a continuation of our cooperation. I think its results will contribute to strengthening of ecological safety," the address of chairman of the Kazakh Supreme Court Kairat Mami reads. One of the key elements of the convention is the access to environmental information and public participation in environmental decision making. The Aarhus Convention is one of the two ratified international documents. The second one is the optional protocol to the Convention on liquidation of all forms of discrimination against women, ratified on July 4, 2001. According to these documents people of the country and non-state legal entities have the right to apply for the international authorities on the Aarhus Convention inobservance. Kazakhstan signed the Aarhus Convention back to 1998 and ratified it two years later.
