June 26, 2008. South Korea, Uzbekistan to establish mil-tech cooperation
Ruslan Mirzayev, Uzbekistan's Minister of Defence, who arrived in Seoul on 24 June, holds talks, the first-ever ones in the history of relations between the two countries, with Lee Sang-hi, Defence Minister of the Republic of Korea (RK), here on 25 June. As a result of the talks, the sides are expected to sign a Memorandum of Intent envisaging the establishment of military-technical cooperation between the two countries and exchanges with military delegations, the RK Defence Ministry has announced. While in the RK, the 43-year-old Uzbek Minister is to tour the leading defence-sector enterprises with a view to determining the scope of and principles for the establishment of cooperation in the defence industry, Kazinform cites Itar-Tass. The Yonhap news agency writes that Seoul intends to make use of Mirzayev's visit for improving the two countries' cooperation in the field of energy. Seoul believes that documents to be signed will furnish a basis for a further development of cooperation. The programme for the Minister's visit also provides for his familiarisation with the Korean Military Academy and National Defence University.
