The population of 8 regions of Uzbekistan will benefit from improved quality of primary care and outpatient services, as well as access to cost effective basic health care under the World Bank financed $US40 million Health II Project, formally launched on 2 April, 2005.
Health-2 will build on the success of the Health I Project which piloted the improvement in primary health care in 5 regions of Uzbekistan between 1998 and 2004. John Langenbrunner, Senior Health Economist said: “The Health I project brought primary health care closer to the people, by serving them directly in their place of residence and reducing the need to refer patients to hospitals for routine medical checks. The result has been more cost effectiveness of the primary health care system and greater access, particularly for the poor in rural areas.”
By the end of project implementation in 2009, the number of pregnant women covered by prenatal care will increase by 10%, as well as the number of newborns who receive hepatitis B immunization. This will significantly reduce child and mortality rates in Uzbekistan making a critical contribution to helping the country achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
