Makhtumkuli Fragi international scientific conference opens in Ashgabat

An international conference dedicated to the course of life and poetical heritage of Makhtumkuli Fragi, outstanding Turkmen poet-philosopher whose 275th birthday is marked this year, opened in Ashgabat on May 12. Azerbaijani, Armenian, Afghani, German, Indian, Iranian, Spanish, Kazakh, Chinese, Kyrgyz, Mongolian, Pakistani, Russian, Serbian, US, Tajik, Turkish, Uzbek, Ukrainian and Czech scientist arrived in the Turkmen capital to participate in the conference titled "Makhtumkuli and the world spiritual-cultural values.

Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Karim Massimov has held a meeting with Economic Development Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan Geydar Babayev today in Ukimet Uyi, Kazinform refers to the Kazakh PM’s press service. The sides discussed a number of the Kazakh-Azerbaijani bilateral trade-economic and regional cooperation questions. Geydar Babayev informed the Kazakh Premier of the results of the 5th session of the Kazakh-Azerbaijan intergovernmental commission.

The Caspian Sea: towards harmonizing views

The foreign ministers of the Caspian Sea states – Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan, gathered in the capital of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Tehran to participate in a regular meeting of the Special Workgroup on the Convention of the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea. During the meeting the partners reaffirmed a reciprocal readiness to complete harmonization of the text of the draft Convention – the document called upon to regulate the activity of all kinds and relationships of the littoral states in the sea. Focusing on importance of continuing the consultations in both bilateral and multilateral formats to harmonize views the representatives of the littoral states with satisfaction stated that in the past years considerable success had been achieved in searching for the mutually acceptable solutions based on the interests of the littoral states and the norms of international law. The participants of the meeting noted that a number of the aspects of the Caspian Sea related problems needed further discussing.

CIS foreign ministers’ meeting to consider 15 draft documents
-
15 draft documents will be considered at a session of the CIS council of foreign ministers that is scheduled to be held in Moscow on March 28. According to the preliminary agenda, the session is supposed to consider a draft plan of main events to mark the 65th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 with regard for national programs. Major part of this plan is dedicated to issues related to social protection of veterans and invalids of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945. The CIS foreign ministers are also expected to consider a draft resolution on raising efficiency of work of the TV and radio company Mir as well as a progress of implementation îf the plan of multilevel inter-MFA consultations in 2007 and the plan of consultations for 2008. They will also discuss a draft resolution on a concept of cooperation in providing information security within the CIS area and a draft statement by the CIS heads of state on expansion of cooperation in fighting drug trafficking.

Uzbek president to visit Azerbaijan

President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov will visit Azerbaijan in the near future, Uzbek Ambassador to Azerbaijan Ismatullah Irgashev told APA. He said a firm date of the visit is uncertain, but Uzbekistan has already prepared all the documents and Azerbaijan is getting acquainted with them. According to the Ambassador, Uzbek President will attend the inauguration of Alisher Navai’s memorial in Azerbaijan during his visit.

Turkmen-Azerbaijani cooperation commission to meet in Baku

A regular meeting of the Turkmen-Azerbaijani interstate commission for economic cooperation will be held in Baku. Turkmen deputy prime minister, minister of foreign affairs Rashid Meredov and deputy prime minister, co-chairman of the commission from the Turkmen side Hydyr Saparliyev reported on preparations for the bilateral forum at a government meeting on March 3. It should be recalled that the first meeting of the Turkmen-Azerbaijani commission for economic cooperation was held in Ashgabat in January 2008.

Informal summit of leaders of CIS member states

The informal summit of the leaders of CIS member states will take place in Moscow. The summit is expected to discuss topical issues related to cooperation within the CIS area, including a progress of implementation of the plan to further develop CIS. The CIS heads of state are also supposed to consider issues of intensification of work on the CIS economic development strategy, proposals on expansion of transportation policy, creation of common energy and food markets, as well as a complex of measures to raise effectiveness of activities of the CIS authorized bodies.

Tajik, Azeri officials discussed opening of Tajik diplomatic mission in Baku

Tajik Deputy Foreign Minister, Abdullo Yuldoshev, held talks in Baku with Azeri Foreign Minister Elmar Mamedyarov to discuss the possibility of opening of Tajik diplomatic mission in Baku. The two also discussed issues related to expansion of bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and Azerbaijan, especially in the economic sphere. In the meantime, Azeri website Bakililar.AZ reported that Azeri minister had highly appraised a level of Azerbaijan’s cooperation with Tajikistan and stressed that opening of the Tajik embassy in Baku would promote further expansion of economic cooperation between the two countries.

Issues of conducting Kyrgyz-Azerbaijani intergovernmental commission’s meeting were discussed

Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan Igor Chudinov had a meeting with ambassador of Azerbaijan to Kyrgyzstan Airf Agaev. At the meeting, I.Chudinov said that Kyrgyzstan attaches a great importance to cooperation with Azerbaijan. “I hope that opening of the embassy of Azerbaijan will develop bilateral relations further and successfully continue it”, - said the head of government. A.Agaev invited the Kyrgyz PM to visit Azerbaijan and conduct business-forum with the participation of business circles of the two states. Besides, the parties discussed issues regarding to conducting a meeting of the intergovernmental Kyrgyz-Azerbaijani commission for trade-economic cooperation. According to them, the meeting will solve numerous issues in bilateral relations and outline plan of cooperation for future.

Workshop discusses trade and transport development in Central Asia

Senior government officials from the member countries of the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) programme of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) will discuss ways to strengthen regional cooperation in trade and transport in Tashkent. Over two days, CAREC senior officials from the areas of customs, trade facilitation, and transport will discuss and share opinions to finalize the Transport and Trade Facilitation Strategy Report. The 3rd Workshop for CAREC Transport and Trade Facilitation Strategy brings together participants from Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, People's Republic of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan; as well as representatives from the ADB, World Bank, Islamic Development Bank, United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, World Customs Organization, European Commission, Japan International Cooperation Agency, United States Agency for International Development and European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan are ready to step up cooperation

Turkmen President, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov received the first deputy prime minister of Azerbaijan and co-chairman of the joint Turkmen-Azerbaijani economic partnership commission, Yakub Abdula Ogly Eyyubov, and Azerbaijani deputy foreign minister Halaf Halafov. The meeting was also attended by Azerbaijan's ambassador to Turkmenistan, Elhan Bahadur Ogly Guseynov. During the meeting, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and Yakub Eyyubov confirmed their readiness to speed up cooperation serving the interests of good neighborliness and mutual benefit. The sides discussed prospects for stepping up cooperation in the fuel and energy sector, trade-economic and humanitarian spheres.

A governmental delegation of the Republic of Azerbaijan visits Ashgabat to take part in the first meeting of the Turkmen-Azerbaijani intergovernmental commission for economic co-operation. First Deputy Prime Minister of Azerbaijan Yagub Eyubov, Chairman of the commission leads the delegation. The partners are expected to issue the documents called upon to bring the interstate co-operation up to a higher level meeting the interests of two friendly countries. President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov is expected to receive the honorary guest.

Economic Commission of CIS Economic Council to hold session in Moscow

The Economic Commission of the CIS Economic Council will hold a session in Moscow. There are nine items on the agenda. The priority will be given to the issues on improving the legal base of cooperation between the CIS member states in the economic sphere. The Economic Commission will also consider an agreement on main principles of the policy of the foreign currency regulation and control in the CIS member states, an agreement on setting up information systems of passports and visas of the new generation, an action plan of development and raising leasing efficiency in the investment process of the CIS member states by 2010. During the session reports on the progress made in implementing instructions of supreme bodies of the Commonwealth of Independent States will be made. Experts will take stock of the progress in implementing decisions taken at the previous session of the Commission on December 19, 2007 as well as the draft agenda for the next session scheduled for April 4, 2008.

Heads of CIS foreign ministries' divisions hold talks in Minsk

The heads of the divisions of the foreign affairs ministries of CIS member states engaged in the implementation of the plan of multi-level inter-ministerial consultations within the frame of CIS met on 16-17 January at the CIS Executive Committee headquarters in Minsk to hold talks. The participants of the meeting discussed the tasks the foreign political agencies of the CIS member-states are facing, particularly those concerning the implementation of the provisions of the CIS Development Concept and the Action Plan for its implementation. During the meeting, the representatives of the foreign political agencies also discussed the implementation of the plan of multi-level inter-departmental consultations within the frame of the Commonwealth of Independent States for 2007, agreed on the project of the Plan of Consultations for 2008, and discussed the issues concerning the organization of the meeting of the Council of the Heads of CIS member-states in 2008.

CIS meeting in Ashgabat ends with signing of a number of documents

A regular meeting of the Council of Heads of Government of CIS member-countries wrapped up in Ashgabat. Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, heads of delegations of CIS member-states - Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Ukraine attended the meeting. A number of documents were signed at the end of the meeting, including in the field of adopting a common policy in standardization, meteorology and certification as well as streamlining customs procedures in exporting electricity across customs borders of CIS countries. It was decided to set up a group composed of agriculture ministers to develop a strategy of food market development. The CIS heads of government also discussed a concept of distance learning in CIS countries and the issue of attaching the status of base institutions of CIS countries to some higher education establishments. The meeting participants agreed to set up permanent exhibitions of CIS countries in the premises of the All Russia Exhibition Center in Moscow and to proclaim the year of 2008 Year of Literature and Reading in the Commonwealth of Independent States. The next meeting of the CIS heads of government council will be held in Minsk in May 2008.

Turkmen president met with CIS heads of government

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov met with heads of CIS governments before the start of a CIS heads of government council meeting on November 22. The meeting was attended by prime ministers of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russian Federation, Tajikistan, Ukraine, vice prime ministers of Uzbekistan and Georgia, CIS executive secretary Sergey Lebedev as well as members of the Turkmen government. The head of state urged all CIS countries to cooperate in the field of education, information-communication technologies, transport and communication. According to him, Turkmenistan is also interested in advanced "know-how" in agricultural sector as well as modern farm equipment. In conclusion, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov noted that cooperation within the CIS would remain a defining vector in the foreign policy of Turkmenistan.

The 47th meeting of the CIS Railways Council is opening today in Baku, Azerbaijan. The meeting aims to sum up the results of work carried out by the CIS Railways Council over the first nine months of this year.
