Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan Igor Chudinov had a meeting yesterday with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. The parties discussed wide range issues of Kyrgyz-Polish relations. I.Chudinov told about the current socio-economic situation in Kyrgyzstan. He expressed Kyrgyzstan's readiness to assist in presence of Polish business in Kyrgyzstan and working out joint economic projects with Poland as well as their implementations. The Kyrgyz PM pointed out the importance of exchanging experience with Poland in working out clusters of economic development in concrete fields of industry, agriculture, tourism etc. Besides, the parties discussed the possibility of cooperation in textile industry. Issues of attracting Polish business to Kyrgyzstan in the field of construction were dicussed. I.Chudinov and D.Tusk considered issues of Poland's participation in ecological programs on Kyrgyzstan, particularly, rehabilitating tailing dumps in the territory of Kyrgyzstan. Issues of cooperation in humanitarian fields were also touched upon, particularly, the possibility of training and raising qualification of doctors, teachers and scientists from Kyrgyzstan.

The Kyrgyz Prime Minister Igor Chudinov will pay official visit to Poland, Latvia and Belarus on May 20-22, 2008. The visit pursues strengthening of bilateral economic and cultural cooperation. Poland will be the first country to be visited by the Kyrgyz delegation on the three-day itinerary. The plans of Igor Chudinov stand for meeting with executives of the state, participation in the Business Forum and visiting Trade Exchange, Seym and Senate. Later Igor Chudinov will hold negotiations with the Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

The year 2007 was a significant period in the Uzbek-Polish trade and economic relations, which laid grounds for and determined the main directions and priorities for further development and expansion of bilateral cooperation between Uzbekistan and Poland. This was told to journalists at a press briefing held by the Trade and Investments Promotion Department of the Embassy of Poland in Tashkent.

A seminar-discussion entitled “European Union and Central Asian relations: towards a new partnership strategy” was held at the Institute of European Studies (Krakow, Poland) with the participation of Uzbek scholar from the University of World Economy and Diplomacy (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) and Ph. D students of the Institute of European Studies. The discussion began with the presentation of Uzbek scholar based on research that he carried out at the Institute of European studies within Erasmus-Mundus research fellowship program of the European Commission and than followed by free-open discussion.

An agreement on cooperation was signed between the ministry of economic development and trade of Kyrgyzstan and the agency on development of entrepreneurship of Poland to deepen mutual relations in the field of small and medium business. The document envisages sharing of experience in the field of small and medium business development.

Gemius SA, the leading European agency on internet researches will organize the first international conference, dedicated to the internet-market of Central and Eastern Europe. The second Polish national exhibition was opened in Tashkent on 2 October within the framework of the visit of Polish delegation to Uzbekistan headed by the Deputy Economy Minister of the Republic of Poland Marcin Korolec. Uzbekistan and Poland are interested in expansion of mutual economic collaboration. According to official statistics, commodity turnover between the countries exceeded US$600 million. And virtually all participants of the exhibition noted that it is not the limit. Organizers believe that this exhibition will influence positively the establishment of mutually beneficial business contacts of both countries' business structures, will promote creation of joint projects and productions.

Studium Europy Wschodniej UW (The Centre for East European Studies of Warsaw University) is organizing the Warsaw East European Conference, Fourth Annual Session, to be held in Warsaw, July 15-18, 2007. THE MAIN SUBJECTS of the Warsaw East European Conference, Fourth Annual Session, are democratic and authoritarian tendencies in East Central, South Eastern and Eastern Europe since 18th century. The Conference will focus on history of 19th and 20th centuries as well as current political, social, economic, national and cultural issues related to the main subject. Special attention will be given to the problems of the communist and post-communist world. Therefore, the Caucasus and Central Asian issues will be also relevant for the WEEC, Fourth Annual Session.

A delegation of Kazakhstan headed by ombudsman Bolat Baikadamov is participating in an annual OSCE meeting on the OSCE human dimension commitments in Warsaw. The agenda includes improvement of the election system, strengthening of democratic institutions, human rights, freedom of media, civil construction in general.

Warsaw hosted a conference of high representatives of member states of Proliferation Security Initiative, also known as Krakow Initiative. More than 60 governmental delegations took part in it. Kazakhstan was represented by Ambassador to Poland Aleksey Volkov, head of the Security Council Secretariat’s sector Yergali Bayadilov, and representatives of Kazakhstan MFA.

It was concluded after the meeting of the head of the ministry Medetbek Kerimkulov with vice Minister of Economy of Poland Andjey Kachmarek. Main topic of the discussion was economic relations between the two countries.

The first meeting of the interparliamentary group on co-operation between Poland and Kazakhstan with participation of Alexei Volkov, ambassador of RK to Poland, took place in Poland. A decision to work out and adopt an Action Plan of the Poland-Kazakhstan co-operation group for 2006-2007 was made at the meeting. In particular, the sides agreed to develop co-operation between the parliaments, exchange visits of MPs, and carry out a number of joint initiatives in education. The Polish side was informed about political and socioeconomic changes in Kazakhstan and acquainted with main provisions of the Presidential Address to the Nation as of 1 March, 2006.

The report, entitled Judicial Systems in Transition Economies: Assessing the Past, Looking to the Future, reviews efforts to transform legal institutions in transition countries since 1990 and assesses their current condition. The authors base their findings on surveys of citizens, lawyers, and enterprise managers throughout the region.
The launch of the judicial report coincides with a June 21-22 workshop on Contract Enforcement and Judicial Systems in Central and Eastern Europe being organized by the World Bank and the National Bank of Poland.

On May, 12th, 2005 Odil Sangov - the first vice-president of Commercial and industrial Chamber of Republic of Tajikistan has met Mr. Marek Piontek - the Trading adviser of Embassy of Republic Poland. During friendly and business conversation questions of a condition of trade and economic cooperation of Tajikistan and Poland have been mentioned. Unfortunately, while this cooperation is limited to export of a clap and aluminium. And import consists mainly of the Polish sugar. It is necessary äèâåðñèôèêàöèÿ commodity circulation between our countries. Then, considering a condition of the Polish industry, increase in volumes of direct investments, creation of the joint venture, a level of high development of the Polish economy for last 10-15 years, O.Sangov on behalf of CIC has suggested to consider an opportunity of carrying out in Dushanbe in 2006 of the National exhibition of Poland. Simultaneously with this action business meetings of the Tajik and Polish businessmen can take place. The visitor has applied to promote in the organization of a similar meeting - "a round table" - autumn of this year for acquaintance of the Tajik businessmen with the Polish business and economy. Further O.Sangov has informed, that the Chamber could invite for participation in the given exhibition of representatives of the countries of the Central Asia, Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, etc., that will give to action the regional status. Marek Piontek has answered, that it hopes that the offer on carrying out of an exhibition will find support in corresponding Polish structures. Also will use the best efforts for realization of this idea. Then the exchange of packages with information materials took place. The visitor also has received CD-disk with the information on the industry of republic and investment offers.

Yesterday, Ambassador Vitold Smidovsky of Poland presented his credentials to chairman of the Turkmen Mejlis Ovezgeldy Atayev.
After the ceremony the Polish diplomat emphasized that his country was watching with keen interest and sympathy the transition phase of Turkmenistan. He expressed his sincere admiration at the fast pace of development of the young state that attaches priority to social programmes. In this context, the Ambassador shared impressions gathered by the Polish delegation after their visit to the Lebap region of Turkmenistan to get acquainted with the life of this region’s population.
The sides discussed a number of issues related to the further strengthening and development of bilateral cooperation in economic and humanitarian fields.

This programme was created to assist the citizens of Central and Eastern Europe - CEE, the former Soviet Union and Mongolia, who are pursuing advanced study within this region but outside of their home countries. It is part of the Open Society Institute's overall efforts to strengthen the academic network within and among these countries. The objective is to support cross-cultural, intra-regional student mobility.

Massive losses from natural disasters in Eastern Europe and Central Asia (ECA) can be reduced by setting up a framework that integrates risk assessment, emergency preparedness, disaster prevention and catastrophe risk finance, says a new World Bank Working Paper released in Istanbul last week. From earthquakes in Armenia and Turkey to floods in Poland and landslides in the Kyrgyz Republic and Tajikistan, the paper estimates that, over the past 30 years, catastrophes cost the ECA region an estimated US$70 billion. The region launched Saving Lives and Property Through Hazard Risk Management: A Comprehensive Risk Management Framework for Europe and Central Asia at a workshop co-organized by the World Bank Institute and the Marmara University in Istanbul, Turkey. From October 26 to 28, more than 20 Eastern European
government delegations, national experts on disaster management, Bank management, representatives from UNDP, the European Investment Bank, the Council of Europe, and the government of India met to share knowledge, exchange ideas and find improved tools to predict and minimize damage of natural disasters. Participants' discussions focused on risk assessment and mitigation, monitoring and warning systems, disaster management, and predicting macro-economic impact.
