March 18, 2008. Kazakhstan supports strengthening Organization of Islamic Conference
Kazakhstan supports strengthening the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) as an effective and authoritative forum of the countries of the Muslim world. The Minister for Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Marat Tazhin stated at the 11th OIC summit. In his speech Foreign Minister noted that "the main priority in OIC work should become development of the economic, infrastructural, educational modernization and all-round increase of competitiveness of the Muslim countries."

March 17, 2008. Tajikistan, Syria to open embassies in Damascus and Dushanbe
President Emomali Rahmon held talks with Syrian Vice President Farouk al-Shara in Dakar, Senegal on sidelines of the 11th OIC Summit. The two discussed issues related to state and prospects of further expansion of bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan Syria. During the meeting, it was noted that the first session of the Tajik-Syrian economic commission would held in Dushanbe this year. Emomali Rahmon noted that he invites Syrian President Bashar Asad to pay an official visit to Tajikistan. They also considered the issue of opening of the Syrian Embassy in Dushanbe and the Tajik Embassy in Damascus. The same day, the Tajik head of state met in Dakar with Bahrain’ Foreign Minister Sheikh Khalid ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad to discuss establishment of bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and Bahrain. During the meeting, they exchanged views on establishment and expansion of cooperation in sectors like hydropower, transportation, gas and oil extraction, chemical, food and light industries, as well as agriculture, tourism, science, etc. The two also considered the possibility of both national and private investments of Bahrain in development of Tajikistan’s economy.

March 14, 2008. OIC summit to adopt some 20 cooperation documents
The 11th summit of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) that opened in Dakar, Senegal on March 13 is expected to result in adoption of 20 cooperation documents. The summit started with Malaysia handing over the presidency of the 57-member organization to Senegal's President Abdoulaye Wade, the host of the meeting. Conflict in Iraq, Afghanistan, Sudan's Darfur region, Somalia and the Palestinian territories, have all been key talking points in the buildup to the summit where Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will also to make a speech. The OIC summit also seeks to focus on reforms to the organization in a bid to modernize affiliated institutions, its campaign against 'Islamophobia'.

March 14, 2008. Tajik president, Qatari emir discussed Roghun hydroelectricity project
President Emomali Rahmon met with Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifah al-Thani in Dakar, Senegal. In the course of the talks, the two discussed a progress of implementation of agreements that had been reached between Tajikistan and Qatar during mutual visits of the heads of state. They, in particular, considered issues related to holding of the fist meeting of the Tajik-Qatari commission for economic and trade cooperation, which is supposed to be held in Dushanbe this year. Emomali Rahmon and Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifah al-Thani also considered the possibility of participation of Qatar in an international consortium for completing the construction of the Roghun hydroelectric power station (HPS) in Tajikistan, opening of the Tajik embassy in Doha and the Qatari embassy in Dushanbe, as well as the possibility of participation of Qatar in construction of a new aluminum smelter in Tajikistan and development of Tajik natural resources.

March 12, 2008. Kyrgyz FM to participate in OIC Summit
The 11th Summit of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) will take place in Senegal’s Dakar, on March 13-14, 2008. A delegation of Kyrgyzstan led by foreign minister Ednan Karabaev will participate in the OIC Summit. It is expected that during the event the sides will sum up the results of joint works on implementing ten-years action program aimed at determining and solving problems.
