Slovakian FM to pay visit to Tajikistan

Foreign Minister of the Republic of Slovakia, Jan Kubis, is expected to pay visit to Tajikistan on August 30. On August 28, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Slovakia to Tajikistan, Macisak Josef, will arrive in Dushanbe to negotiate preparation of Jan Kubis’ visit to the country. During his stay in Dushanbe, Jan Kubis is scheduled to meet with President Rahmon and other high-ranking Tajik state officials.

Slovakia to open general consulate in Dushanbe

Slovakia intends to open its General Consulate in Dushanbe this year, Slovakian Ambassador to Tajikistan Josef Machicak remarked at a meeting with President Emomali Rahmon in Dushanbe on April 2 following the credentials-presenting ceremony. In the course of the talks the sides considered issues related to bilateral relationship between the two countries and cooperation between them within regional and international organizations.

Foreign Minister of Slovakia Jan Kubis met with speaker of the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan [Uzbek parliament's lower house], Erkin Khalilov. During the talks, there were discussed state and prospects of interparliamentary relations between Uzbekistan and Slovakia. Jan Kubis also met with his Uzbek counterpart Vladimir Norov.

Kyrgyz Foreign Minister Alikbek Jekshenkulov met with Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Slovakia to Kyrgyzstan D. Podgorsky. The current condition of bilateral relations and prospects of their development were discussed during the meeting. The sides expressed mutual interest in expanding of cooperation in trade and economic, social, humanitarian and other spheres. The Slovakian Ambassador told about intentions of his Government to activate efforts on strengthening of mutually beneficial partnership with Kyrgyzstan, in particular in economic sphere.

The meeting brought together representatives of the Central Asian Gateway partner institutions, UNDP Regional Bureau for Europe and the CIS (Slovakia), UNDP offices from the Central Asian states and other development stakeholders with the purpose to discuss the project achievements for the first half-year 2005 and to identify directions of the project development for the next phase years.
UNDP Regional Bureau and the CAG project implementing agencies (PPRC, AKI Press Agency, Asia Plus Agency and Center for Economic Research) signed Memorandum of Understanding on partnership.

International business conference will take place in Almaty during 14-16 June 2005. The focus will specifically be on Kazakhstan as a magnet for international investment and what this implies for the region and the future.
The Asia Society’s International Business Conference will explore how Kazakhstan is stepping up as an important player in the global economy and challenging the world’s leading multinationals to participate in the region’s rapid growth.

From June 8-11, 2005, the ECA NGO Working Group, in collaboration with the Commission of the European Community, the ECA Region and the Government of Slovakia, convenes a forum on the Sustainability of Civil Society Organizations in the Post-Accession ECA Region in Bratislava, Slovakia.
A wide range of stakeholders, including civil society representatives from ECA countries, international NGOs and foundations operating in the region, regional government officials, inter-governmental organizations and others are participating on the event.

Central Asian Gateway Steering Committee Meeting in Tashkent

The first meeting of the Central Asian Gateway Steering Committee (CAG SC) will take place at the Center for Economic Research (CER, Tashkent, Uzbekistan) premises on March 17, 2005. The participants will discuss the issues of the second phase of realization of the CAG project.
The second phase of the project is realizing after support from the UNDP RBEC by the efforts of the CAG partner institutions:
This first CAG SC meeting will gather representatives from the following organizations: CER, UNDP Country Offices in the countries of Central Asia, CAG partner institutions, ADB, World Bank, UNDP RBEC in Bratislava and other regional development stakeholders.

Open Society Institute - Soros Supplementary Grants Programme

This programme was created to assist the citizens of Central and Eastern Europe - CEE, the former Soviet Union and Mongolia, who are pursuing advanced study within this region but outside of their home countries. It is part of the Open Society Institute's overall efforts to strengthen the academic network within and among these countries. The objective is to support cross-cultural, intra-regional student mobility.
Grants will be offered to: I. standard eligibility students of the social sciences, humanities and fine and performing arts, who have already arranged for part of the costs of their to be covered; II. special need students: Roma; refugees; people seeking political asylum; displaced (forced migrants).

Gender Equality Community of Practice to meet in Istanbul

Regional UNDP Gender Focal Points and practitioners will meet in Istanbul, Turkey in order to i) strengthen the Gender Community of practice in the region by building its ability to better apply gender mainstreaming principles and to have direct impact on country-level programming; (ii) to exchange experiences and knowledge in gender mainstreaming strategies at the national/sub-regional/regional level to identify region-specific challenges, opportunities and tools, and suggest solutions for promoting gender equality in the region; (iii) to pinpoint how to bridge capacity and knowledge gaps so as to provide high quality policy support and programme development services to UNDP constituencies in Europe and the CIS region.

Vacancy: Project Manager for UNDP Project on Promotion of regional supply of goods, services and expertise for Afghanistan reconstruction

The UNDP Afghanistan in cooperation with other 7 UNDP COs in Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan has established a new project to follow up the Bishkek conference Action plan and to promote regional cooperation for Afghanistan reconstruction. The project will promote the supply and use of goods, services and technical expertise from the countries in the region for the needs of Afghanistan recovery.
The Project Manager will work in a close cooperation with the team of UNDP Partnership for Private Sector Development (PPSD) programme and will coordinate various implementing partners in all involved countries. The Ministry of Commerce is the lead counterpart of the PPSD programme and will lead this task on behalf of Afghan government as well. In all UNDP COs a professional staff member will be designated to act as a focal point for the project. Project will involve government agencies in all countries, all 8 UNDP country offices, UNDP IAPSO; other UN agencies, donor agencies, all national Chambers of Commerce and its regional networks of offices, business support and development centers and trade associations. The WB and ADB offices in the region are expected to be involved in project as the closest partners together with other bilateral agencies.

2004 Disability and Development Conference

From November 30 through December 1 at headquarters, the World Bank will organize its second international disability and development conference, entitled "Disability and Inclusive Development: Sharing, Learning and Building Alliances". This event constitutes a follow-up to the Bank's December 2002 international conference, and will take stock of the work done in the disability and development community over the past two years. The conference aims to build upon its past work in order to further reduce global poverty for disabled people. The event will involve many of the World Bank's partners, which include disabled persons organizations, civil society organizations, development agencies, donors, academia, labor organizations, and others. Participants will attend panel discussions, listen to keynote addresses from distinguished speakers within the disability and economic development communities, browse the many disability-related display booths, and share knowledge on state-of-the-art technology and best practice in disability work. The second day of the conference, December 1, marks World AIDS Day and will include a focus on the themes of "Disability and HIV/AIDS" and "Women, Children and HIV/AIDS."
