- November 18, 2005. Uzbek delegation attends World Summit on Information Society in Tunis

The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) opened in Tunis on November 16 and will close on the 18th of the month. Delegation headed by Deputy Director General of the Uzbek Agency of Communication and Information A. Khodjaev represents Uzbekistan at WSIS. The aim of Uzbekistan's participation in the WSIS is for the country to enclose its contribution into the development of the informational society through sharing experience in implementation of information and communication technologies, as well as to protect the interests of Uzbekistan in elaboration of the policy for the development of international information society.

The World Summit on the Information Society is held in two phases. The first phase of WSIS took place in Geneva hosted by the Government of Switzerland from 10 to 12 December 2003. It addressed the broad range of themes concerning the Information Society and adoption of the Declaration of Principles and Plan of Action. The second phase will take place in Tunis hosted by the Government of Tunisia, from 16 to 18 November 2005.
In the second phase of WSIS efforts are being made to put the Plan of Action into motion and working groups have been set up to find solutions and reach agreements in the fields of Internet governance and financing mechanisms. These working groups will provide inputs to the second phase of WSIS in Tunis. Also, measures will be taken to bridge the digital divide and hasten the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals with the help of ICTs.
