Finland is ready to activate trade and economic relations with Kyrgyzstan. Minister of Foreign Trade and Development of Finland Paula Lechtomyaki told journalists at the Kabar Agency. “Finland is interested in further cooperation in all directions”, Lechtomyaki said.

Intergovernmental agreement on mutual encouragement and protection of investments between Finland and Kazakhstan was signed in Astana by acting Industry and Trade Minister of Kazakhstan Vladimir Shkolnik and Paula Lehtomaki, the Finnish Minister of Foreign Trade and Development.

Heads of administrations and national railway companies that participated in the two-day international regional business forum "On Strategic Partnership Development No. 1520", signed a memorandum "On Strategic Partnership in the Development of Efficiency of the Central Asian Transportation System on the Basis of 1520mm Railways". The document was signed by the heads of administrations and national railway companies of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Finland, and Estonia.

Kazakh-Finnish business forum with participation of business circles of both countries will take place in Almaty. The forum to be organized by Kazakh Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Finland’s Consulate in Kazakhstan and Fiapro Helsinki Company. The goal of the forum is to establishing contacts for the growth of commodity turnover of both countries and development of their mutually beneficial cooperation in spheres of energy, transport, logistic, petrochemistry, electric industry, production of hygiene preparations and pharmaceutics.

A regional conference of ambassadors of the EU member states to Central Asian countries took place in Astana. The conference was organized by the embassy of Finland (the EU chair-country), Germany (the EU representative in Kazakhstan) and the European Commission's office in RK. The agenda of the conference included such issues as the role of the EU in regional security and economic modernization, co-operation in energy and environment, democratization in Central Asia, as well as prospects of the EU strategy in Central Asia.

Aid is one of the most challenging development issues facing the international Community. There is now a pressing need to evaluate performance to date, and the Future for aid in light of recent events such as the post-Monterrey consensus to substantially increase aid to meet the Millennium Development Goals, recent initiatives from donors, and an ongoing focus on Africa. The conference aims to bring together policymakers and academics from both the donor and recipient communities to review the progress achieved so far, identify the challenges ahead, and discuss the emerging new policy agenda in development aid. The conference is intended for policymakers and for researchers from the academic, government, and development communities. The majority of participants attending WIDER development conferences has an academic background (either a position at a university or research institute, or are undertaking a PhD in economics or another social science discipline) or are from government or international organizations. The conference is not suitable for students undertaking an undergraduate or Masters degree. Delegation of business circles of Finland is visiting Uzbekistan. It includes representatives of large companies producing equipment for oil and gas, paper, mining, woodworking, food and other industries. A business forum of Uzbek and Finnish businessmen was held in Tashkent organized by the Commerce and industry chamber of Uzbekistan and the Center for international marketing services of Finland. The main issues of discussion at the forum were development of cooperation. Finland was among the first countries in Europe to establish cooperation with Uzbekistan. Last year’s bilateral turnover increased by almost 30 percent compared to 2004.
