June 20, 2008. Turkmen education delegation visits UK, France
A Turkmen delegation has recently visited the capitals of Britain and France to learn the international experience of planning, monitoring and management in the education sphere. The visit was organized with the support of Turkmenistan's education ministry along with two UN agencies, UNICEF and UNESCO, as well as the British Embassy in Turkmenistan and British Council. During workshops held at the Institute of Education of the University of London and at the UNESCO International Institute for Educational Planning in Paris, Turkmen officials discussed a wide range of issues, which are of current importance in the context of reforms in the spheres of education and science under way in Turkmenistan, the Turkmenistan.ru correspondent has learned from the UNESCO office in Ashgabat. The sides also explored ways of establishing interstate cooperation in the education sphere.

June 4, 2008. Ombudsmen of Uzbekistan, France sign cooperation agreement
The ombudsmen of Uzbekistan and France signed a cooperation agreement on 3 June in Tashkent. The signing took place at the conference on the experience of Uzbekistan and France in human rights protection held at the Legislative Chamber. The forum participants listened to the reports on the protection of rights and interests of the people, the activities of the ombudsman and cooperation with the law enforcement bodies. Uzbekistan has achieved a lot in creation of the democratic state and civil society, the Mediator of the French Republic Jean-Paul Delevoye said. France widely supports the reforms in Uzbekistan, and the two countries have great opportunities for expansion of cooperation, he added. The Uzbekistan Parliamentary Representative for Human Rights has established close ties with related organizations in more than 40 countries, and France is among them. The Ombudsman of Uzbekistan is Sayyora Rashidova. The Mediator of France also held talks with the Speaker of the Legislative Chamber Dilorom Toshmuhamedova, as well as representatives of the Senate, ministries and other state bodies.

January 30, 2008. Kazakhstan, France discussed draft intergovernmental agreement on international autotransportations
The meeting of the experts of Kazakhstan and France took place in Paris, during which the parties discussed the draft bilateral intergovernmental agreement in the field of international autotransportation. During the meeting the parties coordinated the final text of the project of the French-Kazakh agreement on international automobile transportation of cargoes. Following the results of the meeting, the joint protocol was signed. Signing of the agreement is planned during the visit of the Prime Minister of France Francois Fion to Kazakhstan in the beginning of February, 2008. The purpose of the present agreement is creation of the legal base for further development of cooperation in the field of international automobile communication and simplification of realization of automobile transportations between two countries.

January 4, 2008. EDF, Pricewaterhousecoopers to draft Kyrgyzstan hydropower study
EDF and PricewaterhouseCoopers have won the tender for an investment study of the Kambarata-1 and Kambarata-2 hydropower plants in Kyrgyzstan, said Inter RAO UES - the organizer of the tender. Their bid stood at 73.8m rubles ($3m). Other bidders were Mott MacDonald (the UK) and SNC-Lavalin International Inc. (Canada). The winner will sign the contract in early 2008. The construction of the Kambarata cascade began in 1986. About 40 per cent of construction and assembly works have been done at Kambarata-2, in the middle reaches of the Naryn River. The power plant will have the capacity of 360 MW and the annual output capacity of 1.14bn kWh. The Kambarata-1 power plant will be the largest facility of the cascade. It has the rated capacity of 1900 MW and will annually produce 5.1bn kWh of electricity.

October 19, 2007. Delegation of human rights envoys arrives in Turkmenistan
A delegation of envoys in charge of human rights from the foreign ministries of four European countries arrived in Ashgabat. The delegation includes Michel Doucin from France, Guenter Nooke from Germany, Silvia Escobar from Spain and Jan Nordlander from the Kingdom of Sweden.The guests will be received at Turkmenistan's Mejlis, the ministry of foreign affairs and the National Institute of Democracy and Human Rights under the president of Turkmenistan. The delegation members will also have meetings at the education and interior ministries, the health and pharmaceutics industry ministry as well as with teachers and students of the law faculty of the Magtymguly state university.

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammedov had talks with Martin Bouygues, the head of French Bouygues Batiment International Company which is a long-standing partner of Turkmenistan. February 19, 2007. Tajik air carrier negotiates with French companies construction of international terminal
Tajikistan’s State Air Company TajikAir is currently negotiating the construction of a new international terminal at the Dushanbe airport with France’s Alpha Airport and SOFEMA Groupe. The French companies themselves have offered financing of the construction of the new international terminal at the Dushanbe airport. Negotiations that were launched in January are still ongoing. it is possible that both companies will take part in the construction of the terminal. The sides should work out the project for the construction of the terminal and submit it for consideration to the Tajik government.

November 22, 2006. French company interested in developing tungsten deposit in Tajikistan
France’s corporation Sofrimines is interested in participating in development of the tungsten deposit Maykhura in Tajikistan. Prospects of cooperation between Tajikistan and France’s Sofrimines in the field of mining were discussed at a meeting of the ministry’s leadership with representatives from Sofrimines in Dushanbe. French specialists have already visited the deposit to familiarize themselves with its infrastructures. Tajik specialists have worked an investment project for the Maykhura deposit located in the Varzob district. The estimated budget for the implementation of this project is US$10 million.

July 27, 2006. Three-day business forum of Tajik and France entrepreneurs to open in Tajik capital
A three-day business forum of Tajik and French entrepreneurs meeting is expected to be held in Dushanbe from July 29-31. This issue was in the center of discussion of French Ambassador to Tajikistan Pierre Andrieu with the Tajik Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) head Sharif Saidov on July 25. The two discussed protocol and technical issues as well as a schedule of staying of a French delegation in Tajikistan. During its stay in Tajikistan the French delegation wants to familiarize itself with industrial potentials of Tajikistan as well as hold talks with senior representatives from relevant ministries and organizations of Tajikistan and visit the country’s largest enterprises. In the course of the talks Saidov and Andrieu also discussed the present investment environment in Tajikistan as well as Tajikistan’s entrepreneurship legislation and special privileges determined for foreign investors.

Representatives of the «Istedod» Foundation of the President of Uzbekistan and faculty of several Uzbek universities and institutions visited the University Pierre Mendes-France in Grenoble city, France. Cooperation between Uzbek pedagogues and their French counterparts from Grenoble initiated in 2005 with the implementation of «Application of information technologies to the University management» project in frameworks of «Tempus» program. At the meeting of coordination council in Grenoble sides discussed achieved results and plans for further works to be done within the project, which is still underway.

The 4th annual conference Concepts and approaches towards regional security: experience, problems and prospects of interaction in Central Asia was opened in Almaty.
