March 28, 2008. Kazakhstan, EU held bilateral talks on access to services market
Bilateral talks between Kazakhstan and European Union on the access to the services market took place on March 25-26 in Brussels within the framework of the negotiation process on Kazakhstan’s entry to the World Trade Organization. The delegations of Kazakhstan and European Union reached significant progress in the majority of issues of the access to the Kazakhstan services market. Some other key issues including the access to the markets of telecommunication, financial and energy services are expected to be settled in the first half of the current year.

February 27, 2008. Tajikistan, Belgium to sign the first intergovernmental agreement
Tajikistan and Belgium are supposed to sign a government-to-government agreement on avoiding double taxation this year. A Tajik delegation, comprising representatives from the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Justice, was on a working visit to Brussels last week. In the course of talks with representatives from relevant organizations of the Belgian government they discussed the draft of the future agreement. This document will be the first government-to-government agreement between the two countries.

Tourism potential of Uzbekistan was presented at the International Tourism Fair in Leuven, Brabanthal (Belgium). The fair participants showed interest in “world-wide known pearls of the Great Silk Road as Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva, as well as Tashkent and other ancient cities of Uzbekistan. The exposition of Uzbekistan presented to visitors information on achievements of Uzbekistan in tourism sector, which also covered such issues as transportation, accommodation facilities and cultural heritage.

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov met with President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso. The members of the Turkmen delegation and heads of a number of EC commissions attended the meeting. Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov stressed “European values and high living standards appeal to Turkmens”. In this context, the sides exchanged views on the state and prospects of broadening the cooperation in the number of priority areas – education, agriculture, textiles and other spheres. A special role was attached to the further cooperation in the fuel and energy sector. According to the Jose Barroso, Turkmenistan presents interest for the European partners, considering the increasing demands of the countries of Europe in energy.

October 31, 2007. President of Turkmenistan to visit Brussels on November 5-6
President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov will visit Brussels on 5-6 November 2007. This would be his first visit to a European capital as president of Turkmenistan. The cabinet members of Berdymuhamedov are preparing for the visit with view to give a vigorous start to a new chapter in Turkmenistan-Europe relations. According to the current foreign policy Turkmenistan is ready for full cooperation in all areas on the basis of equality and mutual respect. During his visit Berdymuhamedov will meet with Jose Manuel Barroso, president of EC. Meetings are also planned with Javier Solana, EU foreign and security policy point man, and Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, secretary general of NATO. Guy Verhofstadt, prime minister of Belgium and Karel De Gucht, foreign minister of Belgium, are also expected to consult with the Turkmen president. In addition, individual and group meetings are scheduled with top executives of some European companies.

The delegation of Kazakhstan headed by Minister of Labor and Social Protection of Kazakhstan Gulzhana Karagusova participated in the 1st Global Forum on migration and development issues in Brussels (Belgium) on July 9-11. The representatives of 180 countries discussed issues related to the strengthening of the migration processes in the world and exchanged opinions on the development of the effective migration policy.
