June 18, 2008. Tajik, Iranian entrepreneurs to meet in Dushanbe next month
Tajikistan's Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) is expected to host a meeting of Tajik and Iranian entrepreneurs on July 18. According to CCI press service, a decision on holding this conference was taken at a meeting of the deputy CCI head, Asanali Karamaliyev, with a delegation of Iran's South Khurasan province, led by Mr. Mahguli, the deputy head of the South Khurasan commerce directorate, which was held in Dushanbe on June 12. The meeting scheduled for July 18 is dedicated to promote further expansion of trade and economic cooperation between Tajikistan and Iran as well as joint participation in implementation of investment projects in Tajikistan. A June 12 meeting focused on bilateral cooperation in different fields. The purpose of the visit was for the Iranian delegation to get acquainted with Tajikistan's sectors like food industry, production of herbal and chemical medicines, energy, building materials, and agriculture as areas of which could drive the bilateral trade between the two countries. During the meeting, Mr. Mahguli proposed to organize an exhibition of goods manufactured by enterprises of South Khurasan in Dushanbe.

May 13, 2008. Makhtumkuli Fragi international scientific conference opens in Ashgabat
An international conference dedicated to the course of life and poetical heritage of Makhtumkuli Fragi, outstanding Turkmen poet-philosopher whose 275th birthday is marked this year, opened in Ashgabat on May 12. Azerbaijani, Armenian, Afghani, German, Indian, Iranian, Spanish, Kazakh, Chinese, Kyrgyz, Mongolian, Pakistani, Russian, Serbian, US, Tajik, Turkish, Uzbek, Ukrainian and Czech scientist arrived in the Turkmen capital to participate in the conference titled "Makhtumkuli and the world spiritual-cultural values.

May 8, 2008. Kazakh Ambassador visited Chabahar, Iran
Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Iran Yerik Utembayev made a working trip to Chabahar special economic zone located on the coast of the Gulf of Oman in Iran, Kazinform refers to the Kazakh diplomatic representation in Iran. The diplomat got familiarized with the progress of development of the trade-industrial zone, infrastructure of the ports of Shahid Beheshti and Kalantari, construction of a deepwater overload terminal, new stocks and other objects of transport infrastructure and program development of the port zone. Besides, the Ambassador met with Managing Director of the special economic zone Mohammad Taher Baqeri Zadeh and head of Chabahar province.

April 30, 2008. Tajik-Iranian economic commission to meet in Tehran
A meeting of the Tajik-Iranian commission for economic and trade cooperation will be held in Tehran, Iran from May 3-8. According to information from the Ministry of Energy and Industries (MoEI), a government delegation to participate at the meeting will be led by Energy and Industries Minister Gul Sherali, who is co-chairman of the Tajik-Iranian economic commission. "The commission is expected to consider issues related to bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and Iran in the fields of commerce, attraction of investments, standardization and insurance," said the MoEI source. "Besides, the sides will consider ways to expand bilateral cooperation in sectors like transit and transportation, banking and finance, aerial communication, energy and industries." The commission's session is supposed to end with signing of a cooperation protocol.

April 17, 2008. The Caspian Sea: towards harmonizing views
The foreign ministers of the Caspian Sea states – Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan, gathered in the capital of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Tehran to participate in a regular meeting of the Special Workgroup on the Convention of the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea. During the meeting the partners reaffirmed a reciprocal readiness to complete harmonization of the text of the draft Convention – the document called upon to regulate the activity of all kinds and relationships of the littoral states in the sea. Focusing on importance of continuing the consultations in both bilateral and multilateral formats to harmonize views the representatives of the littoral states with satisfaction stated that in the past years considerable success had been achieved in searching for the mutually acceptable solutions based on the interests of the littoral states and the norms of international law. The participants of the meeting noted that a number of the aspects of the Caspian Sea related problems needed further discussing.

March 27, 2008. Iran, Tajikistan, Afghanistan to boost economic ties
A two-day meeting of foreign ministers of Tajikistan, Afghanistan and in Iran in Dushanbe ended with signing of a joint communiqu? for expansion of tripartite economic and cultural relations. The statement, including a prelude and 12 clauses, was endorsed by Tajik Foreign Minister Hamrokhon Zarifi and his Afghan and Iranian counterparts Rangin Dadfar Sepanta and Manouchehr Mottaki respectively. The document states that the three foreign ministers had in their meeting discussed issues of trilateral interest as well as regional and international issues in a friendly atmosphere, reaching the agreement to hold regular consultation on political issues and enhancing cooperation for promotion of regional stability and security. The three sides will take joint efforts against such phenomena as terrorism, extremism, internationally organized crimes, smuggle of drugs and other new challenges and threats. Speaking at a joint press conference after the meeting, Tajik Foreign Minister Hamrokhon Zarifi said that agreements reached in Dushanbe are not politically motivated and they are aimed at other countries; on contrary, expansion of economic cooperation among Iran, Afghanistan and Tajikistan will promote development of relations with the Central Asian states, Russia, China and East Asia.

March 4, 2008. Tajik CCI calls on Iran to expand economic cooperation
Prospects of further expansion of economic cooperation between Tajikistan and Iran were focus of a meeting of Sharif Said, the head of Tajikistan’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI), with Iranian Ambassador to Tajikistan Ali-Asghar Sherdoust that was held in Dushanbe. During the meeting, Sharif Said had noted that Tajikistan seeks further expansion of cooperation with Iran in the sectors like industry, agriculture and tourism. He, in particular, noted that Tajikistan is interested in launching joint ventures and attracting Iranian investments. For his part, Mr. Sherdoust underlined the importance of development of friendly relationships between Iran and Tajikistan and noted that his country was interested in launching joint ventures on production of confectionery.

February 22, 2008. Tajik, Afghan and Iranian foreign ministers to meet in Dushanbe
A tripartite meeting of foreign ministers of Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Iran will be held in Dushanbe on March 25-26. The tripartite meeting has been initiated by Tajik Foreign Minister Hamrokhon Zarifi. Zarifi and his Afghan (Rangin Dadfar) and Iranian (Manouchehr Mottaki) counterparts are supposed to discuss issues related to preparation of a meeting of heads of state of Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Iran, which is scheduled to be held in the Tajik capital this year. The ministers are also planned to discuss joint energy projects and the possibility of construction of highway and railway from Tajikistan via Afghanistan to Iran. The establishment of a joint Persian-language TV channel is also on the agenda of the ministerial meeting.

Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki arrives today in Kyrgyzstan with an official visit. It is expected that during two-day visit, Mr. Mottaki will meet with his Kyrgyz counterpart, country’s leadership, speaker of the parliament, minister of finance, and co-chairman of the joint Kyrgyz-Iranian intergovernmental commission for trade-economic cooperation.

February 20, 2008. Iran’s envoy to take efforts to promote implementation of Iranian-Tajik agreements
Speaking to journalists in Dushanbe, Iranian Ambassador to Tajikistan Ali-Asghar Sherdoust noted that a trade between Tajikistan and Iran in 2007 amounted to $150 million. “We intend to considerably increase a two-way trade between our countries,” Sherdoust said, noting that he will take efforts to promote successful implementation of bilateral agreements signed between the two countries. He assured journalists that to boost trade and economic cooperation between the two countries he would try to organize meetings between representatives of different economic branches every month.

February 15, 2008. Kyrgyz Prime Minister and Iranian Ambassador discussed bilateral cooperation
Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan Igor Chudinov and Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran discussed aspects of bilateral cooperation during the meeting at the Government House. The head of the Kyrgyz Government thanked Muhammed Reza Saburi for efforts taken by him to develop Kyrgyz-Iranian relations. Muhammed Reza Saburi congratulated I. Chudinov on his new appointment and wished success the new Government. In conclusion of the meeting the Iranian Ambassador invited the Kyrgyz PM to pay a visit to Iran.

February 11, 2008. Iran, Tajikistan discussed cooperation issues
High ranking Iranian and Tajik officials on Sunday held talks on ways to develop technical cooperation. The Tajik delegation headed by President Imomali Rakhmon while President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad presided over the Iranian delegation. At the meeting, the two sides called for speeding up implementation of joint industrial and economic projects. The two sides studied the latest status of joint projects. Referring to cultural and historical commonalties, the two presidents called for further expansion of ties between Tehran and Dushanbe in political, economic and cultural fields. Tajik president called for transfer of Iran's electricity to his country, completion of rail roads and construction of roads connecting Tajikistan to Afghanistan. They also discussed investment in construction of aluminum plant by Tajikistan in the Islamic Republic of Iran. The two sides also reviewed drawing up preferential tariffs on goods which should be cleared from customs offices.

February 8, 2008. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad charges energy minister to speed up construction of Sangtuda-2 HPS; Iranian ambassador
Iran’s new Ambassador to Tajikistan Ali Asghar Sher-Doust presented his credentials to President Emomali Rahmon. In the course of the talks the two discussed state and prospects of further expansion of bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and Iran. Speaking to journalists after a meeting with President Rahmon, the new Iranian envoy noted that a two-hour meeting had shown that Emomali Rahmon and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad share the same stances on implementation of new joint projects in economic, social and cultural sectors in the near future as well as mutual exchange of Tajik and Iranian specialists. On the construction of the Sangtuda-2 hydroelectric power station (HPS) in Tajikistan, which funded by the Iranian side, Sher-Doust said that the construction is carried out in accordance with the signed agreement. At request of the Tajik head of state the Iranian president has charged energy minister to speed up implementation of the Sangtuda-2 hydroelectricity project and put the facility into operation ahead of the schedule, the Iranian envoy said.

February 5, 2008. Iran-Uzbekistan Customs heads discussed ways of promoting cooperation
Iran's Customs Governor Hashem Rahbar, who is in Tashkent for an official visit, discussed ways of promoting mutual cooperation with his Uzbek counterpart Sodirkhon Nasyrov Monday afternoon. Referring to Iran's principal policy concerning expansion and deepening bilateral cooperation, Rahbar said Uzbekistan is one of Iran's important partners in the region. Rahbar underlined the necessity of removing obstacles and facilitating mutual trade exchanges, implementing customs agreements and also agreement on preferential tariff between the two countries.

December 6, 2007. Kazakhstan as OSCE head to create efficient dialog between West and East
A press conference with the participation of the Iranian mass media including Fars news agency, Mehr news agency, IRNA, ISNA, Iranian television and radio broadcasting, public and political figures took place in Kazakhstan’s Embassy in Tehran. The meeting was devoted to the election of Kazakhstan as the OSCE head in 2010. According to the participants, the OSCE chairmanship is an achievement of Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbayev, who is given credence of the world community. Former Iranian Ambassador to Kazakhstan Murtazo Saffori stressed that Kazakhstan’s presidency in the OSCE would promote interaction within the framework of the international organizations. He also noted that the state would greatly contribute to the creation of the efficient dialog between East and West.

The official ceremony of launching the construction of the Uzen-Gyzylgaya-Bereket-Etrek-Gorgan transnational railway was held in Balkan province of Turkmenistan. November 27, 2007. Turkmenistan starts construction of North-South transcontinental transport corridor
Turkmen railway workers started piling the foundation of a future railway of the new North-South transport corridor. The beginning of the construction has started at the Bereket station. The 700 km long transport corridor will connect the communication systems of four states – Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Iran that will enable increasing the freight turnover among these states by several times.

Kazakhstan, Iran and Azerbaijan have signed an agreement on construction of a railway branch within the framework of the 2nd Caspian summit in Tehran. The document was signed by Nursultan Nazarbayev, Ilkham Aliyev and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The project provides for construction of the railroad linking Kazakhstan and Iran via Turkmenistan.
