Ruslan Mirzayev, Uzbekistan's Minister of Defence, who arrived in Seoul on 24 June, holds talks, the first-ever ones in the history of relations between the two countries, with Lee Sang-hi, Defence Minister of the Republic of Korea (RK), here on 25 June. As a result of the talks, the sides are expected to sign a Memorandum of Intent envisaging the establishment of military-technical cooperation between the two countries and exchanges with military delegations, the RK Defence Ministry has announced. While in the RK, the 43-year-old Uzbek Minister is to tour the leading defence-sector enterprises with a view to determining the scope of and principles for the establishment of cooperation in the defence industry, Kazinform cites Itar-Tass. The Yonhap news agency writes that Seoul intends to make use of Mirzayev's visit for improving the two countries' cooperation in the field of energy. Seoul believes that documents to be signed will furnish a basis for a further development of cooperation. The programme for the Minister's visit also provides for his familiarisation with the Korean Military Academy and National Defence University.

Prospects of expansion of cooperation between business circles of Tajikistan and South Korea were discussed at a meeting of the head of Tajikistan's Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) Sharif Said with Mr. Kim Hyng-Su, Plenipotentiary Representative of the Korean Embassy to Tajikistan, in Dushanbe on June 5, according to the CCI press service. During the meeting, the CCI head briefed Korean diplomat on priorities and main directions of Tajikistan's economy and outlined energy, mining, housing, road building, health care, agrarian sector and chemical industry as areas that require investment. He underlined the importance of investing in development of processing enterprises both in industrial and agrarian sectors.

Kazakhstan and South Korea intend to activate the volumes of the mutual trade. It was declared during negotiations of prime ministers of two countries, agency reports. "Sides will attach efforts for the further increase of volumes of bilateral trade turnover, maximally using existing potential," says the distributed joint statement of Kazakhstan and Korea. The document says that "the sides stood for the further increase of the effectiveness of intergovernmental of commission on trade-economic cooperation, joint committee on cooperation in the sphere of energy and mineral resources, as well as the sides agreed in the nearest time to conduct the first session of the joint commission on cultural cooperation."

President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov received the Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea Han Seung-Soo on 12 May at the Oqsaroy residence. "The fact that the new Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea started his foreign trips from the official visit to Uzbekistan is an important event in bilateral relations," said the head of the state. "We consider your visit as a sign of special attention to our strengthening cooperation."

The further development of bilateral cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and the Republic of Korea is discussed in Korea during the visit of the First Vice Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan Iskenderbek Aidaraliev to this republic. The Kyrgyz delegation included of governor of Chui oblast K. Syidanov, chairman of the State Committee for Migration and Employment Aigul Ryskulova, director of the State Agency on Architecture and Construction Kanybek Narbaev, First Vice Mayor of Bishkek O. Tarbinsky. During the visit the Kyrgyz delegation met with Korean Prime Minister Han Syng Cu, Minister of Land, Transport and Sea affairs Chang Djong Hvan, Minister of Labour Li Yang Hi, Vice President of state land corporation Om Chak El. In frames of these meetings the issues of further development of bilateral cooperation between the Republic of Korea and Kyrgyzstan and projects on construction of new small towns in Kyrgyzstan. On the results of talks a memorandum is signed between the State Agency on Architecture and Construction and Korean state land corporation.

A South Korean delegation headed by the Secretary-General of the Cabinet of Ministers Cho Jung Pyo has visited Uzbekistan. On 28 March the members of the delegation met with the teaching staff and students of the University of World Economy and Diplomacy. During the meeting the parties noted gradual development of the relations between Uzbekistan and South Korea in the socio-political, trade and economic and humanitarian spheres, an important legal framework for which is provided by the agreements reached between the governments of the two countries. Cho Jung Pyo familiarized closely with the Korean Cultural Centre and the electronic library of the university and highly apprised the conditions provided in the educational institution. The members of the Korean delegation also visited a number of ministries and agencies of Uzbekistan, where they held talks on the expansion of cooperation.

South Korea's Natural Cement Corp. Ltd. and Uzbekistan's Asia Cement International have set up a joint venture to build a roughly $300-million cement plant in Uzbekistan, Akbar Mukhitdinov, head of analysis and development at construction company Uzstroimaterialy, told journalists. The plant will have capacity to produce 1.7 million tonnes of cement per year, he said. Natural Cement, which will use direct investments to finance the project, will have a 75% share in the project, while Asia Cement International will hold 25%.

President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov made a visit to the Republic of Korea during 24-26 February. On 26 February, Islam Karimov held talks with President of South Korea Lee Myung-bak. The two leaders discussed the current state and perspectives of bilateral relations, as well as regional and international issues. Lee Myung-bak confirmed his country’s interest in implementing new projects with Uzbekistan in fields like education, car building, textile, IT, infrastructure, construction, oil and gas. The commodity turnover between the two states comprised USD 850 million last year. In 2008, the figure is expected to reach USD 1 billion. While in Seoul, Islam Karimov visited the GMDAT plant in Inchon, where he met the company president Michael Grimaldi. The sides discussed implementation of joint projects and development of new ones. President Karimov also held negotiations with heads of Korean Air and Korea Gas Corporation.

President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov is on a visit to the Republic of Korea. On Monday, Islam Karimov participated in the ceremony of inauguration of the newly elected President of the Repubilc of Korea Lee Myung-bak. On the same day, Islam Karimov held talks with the president of Korean Air Cho Yang Ho, which focused on cooperation between this company and O‘zbekiston Havo Yollari. The two airlines signed a Protocol of intentions, according to which Uzbekistan should join Sky Team, the international aviation alliance, in 2008-2009. The President of Uzbekistan also held negotiations with the president of the Korea Gas Corporation Su Ho Lee. At the talks, the sides discussed issues of cooperation between Uzbekneftegaz and KOGAS, as well as implementation of joint projects. A founding agreement and charter of the new joint venture UzKorGasChemical were signed. The visit of the President of Uzbekistan to South Korea will end on 26 February.

Korea’s state-run Korea Gas Corp. will sign a preliminary accord with Uzbekistan’s state-owned Uzbekneftegaz next week to jointly develop a gas field in the central Asian country. The 50-50 deal calls for the two sides to set up a joint firm to develop the Surgil gas block in western Uzbekistan near the Aral Sea.

Uzbek President Islam Karimov will participate in inaugural ceremony of South Korean President Lee Myung-bak on 25 February. Lee's inaugural ceremony is to take place in front of the National Assembly in Yeouido, central Seoul, with a total of 45,000 guests, including 25,000 ordinary citizens, foreign tourists and executives of foreign-invested firms in Korea.
