A business forum of business circles of Uzbekistan and Latvia was held in Tashkent. Heads of ministries and departments, and companies, operating in the sphere of economy, agriculture, transport and transport communications, logistics, metal- and wood working, construction, as well as metal mining industry attended the event. During the forum, the sides considered issues of trade-economic and investment cooperation between two countries, particularly further development of ties in metal- and wood working industry, logistics, agriculture, construction, electrical and light industry, in the sphere of tourism, as well as issues of attraction of Latvian companies in process of privatization in Uzbekistan.

Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Republic of Uzbekistan together with the Trade-Industrial Chamber of Latvian Republic are organizing a visit of the delegation of Latvian entrepreneurs to Tashkent, capital city of Uzbekistan, on 8-10 October. The delegation consists of heads of nine large Latvian companies operating in the spheres of metal and wood processing, peat extraction, logistics, agriculture, building materials production. It is planned to hold an Uzbek-Latvian business forum and cooperation exchange between the businesses of the two countries at Radisson SAS Tashkent hotel on 9 October.

Akja Nurberdieva, Chairwoman of Mejlis of Turkmenistan, received the credential letters from Igors Apokins, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Latvia to Turkmenistan. During the conversation, the sides noted the Turkmenistan and Latvia have opportunities for partnership in education, culture, and discussed cooperation in oil and gas, textiles and agriculture. As Igors Apokins said, as an EU member state Latvia is ready to offer transit for Turkmen commodities to the European market, banking services, woodworking and different industrial sectors.

Videoconference dedicated to risk analysis system development is organized by UNDP Improving Tax Administration in Uzbekistan Project jointly with International Finance Corporation. During the conference organizational procedures, development of risk criteria, oversight procedures in the framework of risk analysis system and approaches to development of risk analysis system in Uzbekistan will be discussed.
Videoconference consists of the presentation on risk analysis system by representatives from Latvian State Revenue Service, discussions and question and answer session. Based on the outcomes of the videoconference, conceptual approaches of the risk analysis system for the conditions in Uzbekistan will be developed.

Baltic Financial Summit «Banking and Finance in the Baltics», which to be conducted in Riga, is the major financial event in the Baltic region. A conference conducts since 1995 and is the largest financial forum in the Baltic region. The summit will bring together around 350 participants from the Baltic States, Europe, Russia and the CIS (348 participants from 22 countries in 2005). Delegates attending the summit this year will include Ministers of Finance and Economy, Governors of National Banks of the Baltics as well as heads of commercial and investment banks, insurance companies and other financial organizations and major companies. During the 2006 summit the main topics of macroeconomic and banking system development, as well as financial issues of the Baltic region will be discussed in the light of the EU development in dialogue with government representatives, business people, bankers, investors and representatives of international financial organizations. Latvia and Uzbekistan signed an international agreement on economic and industrial cooperation in Riga, Latvia. The agreement was signed during the meeting of State Secretary of Latvian Economy Ministry Kaspars Gerhards and Uzbek First Deputy Foreign Minister Isan Mustaev. The sides evaluate the agreement as positive step for further development of bilateral economic dialogue. Within the agreement, the intergovernmental commission will be created, which will enforce agreement into practice.

Agreements on new transit way from West China to Europe reached in Riga by representatives of Latvia, Russia, China and Kazakhstan, Prime-Minister of Latvia Aigars Kalvîtis told after the meeting with Ambassadors of Russia, China and Kazakhstan. He told, that a number of technical issues concerning development of new transit way were discussed at the meeting.

The Trade Mission which is going to be opened 12 May in Almaty is supposed to assist in development of trade and economic partnership between Kazakhstan and Latvia. The main objective of ours is establishment of new contacts and relations, said Head of the trade mission Andreys Pumpurs. He called to designing of joint ventures and realization of new projects. The Trade Mission was established by Latvian State Agency of investments and development accredited in Kazakhstan MFA.

This programme was created to assist the citizens of Central and Eastern Europe - CEE, the former Soviet Union and Mongolia, who are pursuing advanced study within this region but outside of their home countries. It is part of the Open Society Institute's overall efforts to strengthen the academic network within and among these countries. The objective is to support cross-cultural, intra-regional student mobility.
Grants will be offered to: I. standard eligibility students of the social sciences, humanities and fine and performing arts, who have already arranged for part of the costs of their to be covered; II. special need students: Roma; refugees; people seeking political asylum; displaced (forced migrants).
