April 11, 2008. UNDP offered to reduce the poverty level of population in Kazakhstan by 2015
International executive committee UNDP offered to Kazakhstan to reduce as twice the poverty level of population, living in villages by 2015. It was announced today in Almaty by the UN coordinator in the republic Haoliang Xu during media briefing "International executive council UNDP on social and economic situation in Kazakhstan, agency reports. Haoliang Xu stated, that for this period "we are in talks with the state bodies with the aim of setting of higher level in juncture with development goals in the eve of the millennium, which Kazakhstan attained." "One of the suggestions, for instance, is to reduce as twice the number of people, who are living below the level of poverty in villages by 2015. Kazakhstan achieved the common goal on reduction of poverty for the period starting from 90-ies …today we are working, in order to set a higher level," he said. "According to the UN data, at the moment the level of poverty in Kazakhstan - 18,2%. It is the percent of people whose income is below the living minimum … In 2005 this index was lower, about 11%...In Astana, Almaty the level of poverty 5 - 6% and perhaps lower," Haoliang Xu stressed. According to Haoliang Xu, Kazakhstan has one of the best results among CIS on poverty level. Official data of the state bodies show that GDP per capita in Kazakhstan for he beginning of 2008 made up for USD6700. In correspondence with the global index of human development data, which is counted by the UNDP, Kazakhstan took 79 place in the list of countries where the index was counted. In the report on human development for 2007 Kazakhstan rose by 6 lines and is placed at 73 place among other countries," Haoliang Xu stated.

December 3, 2007. ADB, Tajikistan signed $2 million grant to rehabilitate key infrastructure in northeast Tajikistan
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of Tajikistan signed an agreement for a project that will help rehabilitate key infrastructure in northeast Tajikistan to restore access for rural communities that were isolated after flooding washed away a suspension bridge in 2006. The project highlights the Government of Japan’s significant contribution to ADB’s goal of reducing poverty in the Asia-Pacific region. The Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction will provide a $2 million grant to be managed by ADB for the Sustainable Access for Isolated Rural Communities Project, estimated to cost $2.4 million. The balance will be covered by the Government of Tajikistan.

November 23, 2007. Official web-site of the Welfare Improvement Strategy was launched in Uzbekistan
The Welfare Improvement Strategy for 2008-2010 (WIS) has been endorsed by the Presidium of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan on August 27, 2007. The WIS is expected to promote the coordinated implementation of national and sector development programs and plans aimed at promoting sustainable economic growth and enhancing the living standards of the population. The official web-site of the Strategy, which is available at www.wis.uz, was launched. Web-site visitors may get acquainted with the text of the Strategy and the database of relevant materials; the process of its formulation, implementation and monitoring; main news and events, being realized within the WIS process; database of useful links. The web-site is available in English and Russian languages. Uzbek version of the web-site is planned to be launched in early December, this year.

November 7, 2007. Representatives from economy ministry and 12 NGOs met to discuss poverty reduction issues
Senior representatives from the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade (MoEDT) met with top managers of 12 international and local NGOs in Khujand, the capital of the Sughd province, to discuss a progress of implementation of the Poverty Reduction Strategy in Tajikistan. The meeting participants represented public associations from different regions of the country that had incorporated into the Group for monitoring a progress of implementation of the Poverty Reduction Strategy in Tajikistan. As participation of various sectors of civil society in implementation of the Strategy is obligatory, MoEDT is interested in close cooperation with the mentioned group. Moreover, MoEDT plans to elaborate a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on mutual cooperation and prepare a plan of joint actions as well as determine mechanism of holding regular meetings.

September 3, 2007. ADB, Tajik ministry of economy to help specialists elaborate system for monitoring realization PRS
A two-day seminar on issues related to elaborating a system of monitoring a progress of realization of the Poverty Reduction Strategy (PRS) in Tajikistan opened at the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade (MoEDT) in Dushanbe today. The seminar has brought together representatives from Tajik ministries, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Mission to Tajikistan, UNDP CO in Tajikistan, etc. The seminar has been staged by the ADB as part of a joint project run by the ADB and MoEDT. The main objective of the seminar is to involve all interested parties in work on creation of a system of monitoring a progress of realization of the PRS in Tajikistan. The seminar is expected to end with preparing a list of indices of the monitoring system, concerted format of reports as well as consensus on the monitoring regulations.

July 25, 2007. ADB Supporting Education for Kyrgyz Republic's Children with Special Needs
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is helping the Government of Kyrgyz Republic address the educational needs of children with special needs in order to better prepare them to become active members of society and reduce their vulnerability to poverty. A $1-million grant from the Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction, funded by the Government of Japan, will be provided by ADB to support the Improving Access to Quality Basic Education for Children with Special Needs Project.

May 23, 2007. Main results of WIS formulation process to be discussed
Currently the Government of Uzbekistan is working on development of Welfare Improvement Strategy (WIS) of the country. Strategy development is undertaken by Sectoral Working Groups (SWG), involving representatives of key line ministries and agencies, national analytical centers, private sector and civil society. Methodological assistance to SWGs is rendered by a group of international experts with valuable experience in consultation of developing countries and countries with transitional economies on issues concerning elaboration of national development strategies and welfare improvement.

The World Bank representative office in Uzbekistan and Center for Economic Research is planning to hold research and empirical seminar on "Priority directions for welfare improvement in Uzbekistan" on May 11, on May 11, 2007 at "Grand Orzu" Hotel. The seminar is aimed at presenting results of the research works, carried out within the framework of small grants by the World Bank for undertaking research activity in the sphere of analysis of living standards in the country. April 20, 2007. Switzerland, GBAO government signed agreements on extension of two projects
Switzerland and the government of the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (Gorno Badakhshan or GBAO), Tajikistan have signed agreements on extension of the Pamir High Mountain Integrated Program and Local Self-Governance Project in southeast and east Tajikistan for a total amount of 1, 083,000 US dollars. The overall goal of both – Pamir High Mountain Integrated Program as well as the Local Self-Governance projects is to contribute to poverty reduction through sustainable improvements in rural livelihoods in mountainous areas and promotion of local governance in Tajikistan.

June 28, 2006. Implementation of program for management and raising living standards of population discussed in Gorno Badakhshan
The Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) has provided more than US$380,000 for the implementation of socioeconomic projects in Gorno Badakhshan within the framework of program for management and raising living standards. This was remarked in the course of a republican seminar on a progress of the implementation of this program that was held in Khorog. The seminar was staged by President’s Executive Office and the SIDA Country Office in Tajikistan. The seminar participants included representatives from a number of relevant ministries and organizations as well as chairmen of the GBAO districts and heads of Khovaling, Shuroobod, Roghun and Fayzobod districts.

June 23, 2006. ABD to provide US$1.45 billion to CAREC member nations for implementing large projects
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide US$1.45 million for implementing 25 large projects in the Central Asian region, as well as in Afghanistan and Mongolia. The funds will provided within the framework of the Central Asia Regional Economic Program (CAREC). The Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) is an Asian Development Bank (ADB)–supported initiative to encourage economic cooperation in Central Asia. Begun in 1997, the Program has so far focused on regional initiatives in transport, energy, trade facilitation, and trade policy critical to improving the economic performance of the region and the livelihoods of all people, especially of the poor.
