President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov signed a resolution in accordance with which the Ministry of Communications of Turkmenistan will assemble by this June the modern communication equipment for bettering the access to the Internet aimed at further development of the Internet system in the country. According to the resolution, the Ministry of Communications will conclude contracts with TATA Communciations Company (Great Britain) and Satgate (the Republic of Latvia) to organize international commutation channels of communication with Internet with a total value of US$ 218.6 thousand.

United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) supports conducting the Youth Media Training on covering youth issues with focus on healthy lifestyle promotion on 29-30 April. This activity is organized by National Association of Electronic Mass Media (NAESMI), NAESMI Public Fund, Kelajak Ovozi Youth Initiatives Centre and Kamolot Public Youth Movement. This training event with focus on practical application of newly acquired skills is developed in the framework of "Creating Youth TV Stations" project to train the participants from all provinces of Uzbekistan, the Republic of Karakalpakstan and Tashkent City on covering youth-related issues through TV programmes on local television stations. "Our goal is to ensure that youth participating in this project realizes significance of covering such issues as reproductive health, healthy lifestyle, gender equality, HIV/AIDS prevention and Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), and will receive all necessary information to develop good quality TV programmes for healthy lifestyle promotion among youth nation-wide," commented Feruza Fazilova, UNFPA National Officer on Reproductive Health.

The Special Interest Group on International Information Issues (SIG-III) of the American Society for Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T) is pleased to announce its ninth competition for papers to be submitted for the 2008 Annual Meeting, which will take place in Columbus, Ohio, October 24-29, 2008. The theme of this year’s paper contest is: “People Transforming Information – Information Transforming People“. Only papers by a principal author who is a citizen of, and resides in a developing country are eligible. Winners in the 2004-2007 contests are not eligible. The papers should be original, unpublished, and ONLY in English. We encourage submissions from librarians, information and network specialists, and educators involved in the creation, representation, maintenance, exchange, discovery, delivery, and use of digital information. Authors are invited to submit manuscripts, not to exceed 5,000 words, by March 31, 2008, to jjeng@njcu.edu, preferably as Microsoft Word attachments.

The first congress of IT companies of Kazakhstan is taking place at the “Intercontinental” Hotel in Astana today. The representatives of more than 150 Kazakhstan’s IT companies, state bodies, banking system and educational establishments participate in the congress. They are planning to work out recommendations to the Government and all interested enterprises on the development of the national IT branch.

Environment protection, providing ecological stability, increasing ecological culture of the population and lowering negative influence of industrial production on an environment are among the priorities of policy. These issues were discussed during the conference devoted to efficiency of use of information and communication technologies in environment protection and natural resources saving, which took place at the Tashkent University of Information Technologies. The event was organized by the Institute for Study of Civil Society, National Association of non-governmental and non-commercial organizations of Uzbekistan, International organization of ecology and health “Ecosan”, Uzbekistan non-governmental and non-commercial organizations Ecoforum. Specialists from relevant state, non-government organizations and research institutes attended the event.

A seminar on development of electronic skills and capacities of agri-industrial business in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan will be held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on December 13-14. The event aims to consider issues related to strengthening beneficiaries’ potentials on web-marketing and raising their competitiveness at international level. The seminar participants will familiarize themselves with international experiences and advanced technologies in this field. The seminar is expected to end with adoption of recommendations on development of electronic commerce in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. Experts from a number of European countries as well India and Iran have been invited to take part in the seminar.

Kazakh Government approved a draft program on development of the e-government for 2008-2010. The Cabinet of Ministers unanimously voted for it. A number of issues is expected to be solved within the programme, namely, implementation of the principles of state management, improvement of quality of the e-government’s infrastructure, transparency of work of the state bodies, corruption reduction etc.

Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Director General of the Uzbek Agency of Communication and Informatization (UzACI) Abdulla Aripov met with the President of Korea Telecom Corporation Nam Jung-Su. The sides discussed issues on further development of bilateral mutually beneficial cooperation in the newest areas of the sphere of information and communication technologies. During the meeting in Tashkent the sides also discussed further development of East Telecom network based on the technology of broadband wireless access WiMAX.

The UNDP’s “ICT Policy” project with assistance of Communication and Information Agency of Uzbekistan (UzACI) has prepared the Report on analysis of progress made by Uzbekistan in implementing the decisions of the World Summits on the Information Society (WSIS stocktaking) conducted in Geneva and Tunis in 2003 and 2005 accordingly. The summary of the Report (in English) is available on ICTP project website at: http://ru.ictp.uz/downloads/wsis_report_brief_2007_eng.pdf. UNDP’s project “Assisting the Government of Uzbekistan in the formulation and implementation of ICT for development policy” is aimed at supporting the development of ICT policy in Uzbekistan and facilitating use of ICT for achieving development goals.
