Despite the continuous and comprehensive efforts to strengthen its statistical capacity building and establishing an institutional framework the Government of Uzbekistan still needs strong support from international donor community. At present, however, there is no effective initiative to support in this sphere in Uzbekistan. It should be noted that the majority of initiatives and activities have been short-term based or in most cases as a component of another project. Therefore, there is a need for designing of sector-oriented (statistics) and multi-donor-funded programs/projects.
To support efforts of the Government of Uzbekistan in dealing with problems related to the production and dissemination of relevant and accurate economic indicators United Nations Development Program Country Office (UNDP CO) has initiated a new synergy project aimed at building partnership for cooperation with users and producers of statistical information.
In this regard, we are interested in discussion the following questions and to know your personal opinion: 1) Do you satisfy with the quality, regularity, and availability of the current statistical information presented by national and local statistical agencies? 2) In your opinion, what should be done in the near future to improve official statistics? 3) What kind of new indicators are needed?
We appreciate you valuable comments and suggestions.
Sincerely, Ulugbek Olimov |

National statistics agencies in transition countries cannot to provide with regular and reliable statistical data. What should be done to improve national official statistics: In my vision you need comprehensive assessment of needs of key users of statistical information, including private sector, especially SMEs, civil society and mass media; assessment of capacities and needs of key government institutions on central and local levels in data collection, processing and dissemination, with focus on real sector development indicators. |

I think that Central Asia countries should developed Millennium Development Goals statistics and indicators database. This will be a basis of development database for statistics in Central Asia. I think that everybody knows how hard to take access to statistical data in Uzbekistan. If you did not work in government bodies, government financial institutions or international organizations, you cannot take a qualitative statistical data. |
