The SCO's Business Council will promote economic cooperation in finance, science and technology, energy, transportation, telecommunications, agriculture, and trade. Tajikistan, Iran leaders to sign bilateral documents in Tajik capital. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is supposed to pay an official visit to Tajikistan in early July this year. Talks in Tajikistan will focus on prospects of further expansion of trade and economic cooperation between Tajikistan and Iran. Ahmadinejad’s visit to Tajikistan is expected to result in signing of a number of cooperation agreements. More information... Back to the top3. June 16, 2006. Office of the Moscow cultural-business centre (House of Moscow) opened in Bishkek. Creation of the House of Moscow in Bishkek is the joint project of Kyrgyz and Moscow Governments and supported by UNDP. Among the major tasks are development and support of public-private dialogue, bilateral trade, as well as economic and investment cooperation. More information... Back to the top4. June 16, 2006. SCO leaders signed documents on collaboration. Following results of Summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Shanghai, leaders of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan signed the 5th anniversary Declaration and Statement of leaders of the SCO member countries on international information security. The Declaration states: "There is general stability in the Central Asia. Countries in this region have achieved historic success in political and economic reforms and social development. The unique historical and cultural traditions of Central Asian nations deserve respect and understanding of the international community. The governments of Central Asian countries should be supported in their efforts to safeguard security and stability, maintain social and economic development and improve people's livelihood". The Third Summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia will take place in 2010, the Declaration of the second forum of CICMA signed by its participants says. Besides, it is decided to announce October 5 as a Day of CICMA in commemoration of the idea of conveying this meeting by the President of Kazakhstan at the 47th session of the UN General Assembly in 1992. More information... Back to the top6. June 19, 2006. CICMA Summit Declaration is signed. The representatives of CICMA member states signed a Declaration of its II Summit in Almaty. It reflects member states’ attitude to the security and cooperation problems of the world and the region, and problem-solving proposals. Kyrgyz government started to prepare SCO Summit. The government of Kyrgyzstan started to prepare for a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. Kyrgyzstan was elected chairman of the SCO at its last summit and now the organization’s next meeting will take place in Kyrgyzstan. More information... Back to the top8. June 21, 2006. Issues of interaction between Kazakhstan and NATO were discussed in Almaty. Issues of interaction between Kazakhstan and NATO in counteraction to global challenges were discussed at the round table organized by International Institute of Modern Policy. President of Uzbekistan met with KFAED Director General. President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov received Director-General of the Kuwait Fund for Arab and Economic Development (KFAED) Abdulwahab Al-Bader in Oqsaroy residence. During the meeting the sides exchanged opinions on state and perspectives of large-scale financial cooperation between Uzbekistan and Kuwait Fund for Arab and Economic Development. More information... Back to the top10. June 23, 2006. ABD to provide US$1.45 billion to CAREC member nations for implementing large projects. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide US$1.45 billion for implementing 25 large projects in the Central Asian region, as well as in Afghanistan and Mongolia. The funds will be provided within the framework of the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation Program (CAREC). CAREC is the Asian Development Bank-supported initiative, which aims to encourage economic cooperation in Central Asia. Started in 1997, the Program has so far focused on regional initiatives in transport, energy, trade facilitation, and trade policy critical to improving the economic performance of the region and the livelihoods of all people, especially of the poor. More information... Back to the top11. June 26, 2006. Uzbekistan became a member of the CSTO. Uzbekistan became the seventh member of Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO). This decision was adopted at the CSTO Council by Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Russia. More information... Back to the top12. June 26, 2006. Kazakhstan was represented at the session of the Krakow Initiative. Warsaw hosted a conference of high representatives of member states of Proliferation Security Initiative, also known as Krakow Initiative. More than 60 governmental delegations took part in the event. Kazakhstan was represented by Ambassador to Poland Aleksey Volkov, head of the Security Council Secretariat’s sector Yergali Bayadilov, and representatives of Kazakhstan MFA. More information... At the session of EurAsEC Interstate Council in Minsk the Concept of EurAsEC international activity, defining concerted actions on promotion of interests of the Community at the international arena, was adopted. The concept specifies main goals, aims, principles and directions of cooperation of the EurAsEC member-states on provision of international interests of the Community and mechanisms of their implementation. Presentation of the UNDP's Human Development Report for Central Asia and strategy in the region took place at the annual session of the Executive Council of UNDP/UNFPA in Geneve. Representatives of UNDP, members of Executive Council, delegations from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan took part in the event. Main purpose of the report is to render support to countries of the region in promotion of regional cooperation and integration as means of stable development provision in Central Asia. Deputies of Kazakhstan's Senate adopted draft law "On ratification of Memorandum of cooperation between Governments of Kazakhstan and the United States on Kazakhstani-American program of economic development". The law is directed to facilitate further development of mutually beneficial partnership between both countries, enhancement of competitiveness of Kazakhstan business sector and promotion of domestic products at the world market. Kazakhstan is interested in acquiring a number of foreign transport assets, the chairman of the Kazakhstan "Kazyna” Sustainable Development Foundation Kairat Kelimbetov told at the Saint Petersburg Economic Forum. According to him, negotiations on purchasing and construction of sea terminals in the ports of Latvia, Lithuania, Georgia and Azerbaijan are underway. More information... Back to the top2. The Russian trade representative office in Tajikistan will operate to promote trade and economic cooperation between the two countries through informing businessmen in Russia and Tajikistan on economic situation, trade and economic potential and prospects for cooperation between Russia and Tajikistan. National holding company of Uzbekistan Uzbekneftegaz plans to involve the South Korean corporation Kogas for participation in constructing of a gas-chemical complex in Ustyurt with total cost of US$1.1b. Project envisions creation of JV and polyethylene production. More information... Back to the top4. June 20, 2006. China's telecom leader ZTE intends to finance three projects in Tajikistan. China’s ZTE Corporation intends to implement three new projects in the Tajik telecommunications sector. This issue was discussed at the meeting of President Rahmonov with senior representatives from China’s telecom leader in Shanghai on June 15. The total cost of these projects is US$70 million. Aga Khan Foundation/Mountain Societies Development Support Program and GBAO Regional Government organized a workshop on “Linking Government and Communities for Local Development” in Khorog, Gorno Badakhshan. Representatives of the central and regional governments of Tajikistan, international development agencies and non-governmental organizations participated at the workshop. More information... Back to the top2. June 26, 2006. The World Bank supports Civic Engagement Initiatives in Tajikistan. The World Bank Tajikistan Country Office has announced the winners under its Small Grants Program in 2006. Focus and the purpose of the Small Grants Program are to seed and support activities that empower and enable citizens’ groups to take initiatives that enhance their role and influence over development outcomes. These activities strengthen mechanisms for inclusion, accountability, participation and partnership with public sector, civil society organizations, and private sector. This year, the seventy-five local NGOs submitted their project proposals under the program, and only seven of them have been awarded grants ranging from US$3,000 to US$7,000. Malaysian corporation of multimedia development is ready to render assistance to Kazakhstan in realization of the project of electronic government. Administration of the corporation told about it to the President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev during his familiarization with the project of multimedia super corridor in cybercity Cyberjaya. National Bank for Foreign Economic Activity of the Republic of Uzbekistan attracted long-term credit line of the China's State Development Bank in the amount USD20 million to finance projects of small business and private entrepreneurship. The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), UNESCO and Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan hosted the 5th Central Asian Region and Kazakhstan Education (CARK) Forum. Turkmenistan has taken over as rotating chair of the CARK Education Forum. Leaders and representatives of education systems of Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, senior international experts from the regional divisions of the UN agencies, including UNICEF and UNESCO, as well as the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank representatives attended the forum. Six graduates from Dushanbe school aspire to the golden medals by the results of the 2005-2006 years. The Ministry of Education will take a final decision on awarding the medals. Conference on prospects of improvement of juridical education. Scientific-practical conference, devoted to the prospects of improvement of juridical education took place at the Tashkent State Juridical Institute, organized by the initiative of Justice Ministry of the Republic of Uzbekistan. Aircraft operated by Tajik State Air Company “Tojikiston” will be equipment with ground proximity warning system (GPWS). That was requiered by EUROCONTROL (European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation). The event was organized by the embassy of Kyrgyzstan to Turkmenistan. Chairman of the state committee of Turkmenistan on tourism and sport A.Berdyev, heads of tourist firms of Turkmenistan and a number of public organizations attended the presentation. A five-day workshop formally titled “Control and Integrity” will be conducted at the Tajik resort “Khoja-Obigarm”. The workshop will focus on the issues of transparent public administration in Tajikistan. The workshop, organized with support of UNDP, also aims to consider issues related to planning and distribution of the national budget, fight against corruption, etc. Representatives of various profile committees of the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament), representatives from the Prosecutor-General’s Office, Ministry of State Revenues and Tax Collections, as well as other ministries and organizations, and international organizations will participate in the workshop. The Development Gateway Foundation is calling for nominations from around the globe for the third annual Development Gateway Award. The award recognizes outstanding achievement in the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) to improve the lives of people in developing countries. This year we are highlighting projects that empower or improve the conditions of youth. There are about 1 billion young people, aged 15-24, in the world today and eighty-five percent of them live in developing countries. Young people play a central role in the information society as first adoptors of information and communication technologies. During three days the participants will consider issues of working out strategic approaches and strengthening ties, and study methods of fight against human trafficking and instruments available for preventing human trafficking in Tajikistan.
